I’m not a huge New Mutants fan, but the fact that comic book icon Chris Claremont is returning to the characters for a one-shot titled New Mutants: War Children Issue 1 has me excited. Bill Sienkiewicz will serve as the artist on the upcoming project.

New Mutants: War Children Issue 1 is currently set for a September 18, 2019, release. Sienkiewicz is doing the art for the cover as well as the interior of the comic book. I can’t wait to see what Claremont has in store for the fans of these characters.

Offering you a bit of history, it was Claremont (along with co-creator Bob McLeod) who introduced the New Mutants to the world back in September of 1982. Sienkiewicz’s art style helped make this team of young mutants stand apart from the rest in the comic book market. With the two back together for the one-shot, September is likely going to be a great month for fans.

Here’s the official description:

STRONG AND FREE! Don’t miss this momentous event as legendary creators CHRIS CLAREMONT and BILL SIENKIEWICZ reunite with Magik, Wolfsbane, Cannonball, Cypher, Mirage, Karma, and Sunspot to share this never before told story of the New Mutants’ past!

When Warlock experiences a nightmare, he begins going haywire, and it’s up to his friends to save him! But as Warlock grows more frenzied, they should be worrying about being able to save themselves…and doubly so when Magik’s inner demon, Darkchylde, threatens to break free! Also, a special guest appearance by none other than Kitty Pryde!

I’m okay with the one-shot being set in the past. Who knows, it might offer some kind of a link to the what the X-Men will be experiencing during House of X and Powers of X events.

While you wait for September 18, 2019, do yourselves a favor and read The New Mutants: Dead Souls mini-series by Matthew Rosenberg. I still think his current Uncanny X-Men story is a mess (where is Wiccan?), but NM: Dead Souls one of the best comic book stories I’ve read in a long time.

Feel free to share your thoughts with us.
