New Teaser Trailer for ‘The Stand’ Released, Show Premiering December 17th

The Stand

A new teaser trailer for The Stand has been released, and we can all prepare to spend our quarantined Christmas watching a story about a massive pandemic.  Yeehaw!

Big OOF on the timing of The Stand.  This is by far my favorite Stephen King book, and I’ve been wanting to see it redone for literally decades.  I read the book in junior high and watched the original show adaption.  I remember feeling it was dated then, and it’s only gotten worse since.  So I’ve been incredibly excited to see this new adaption hit screens… but then Corona happened…. and, well, now I’m a bit unsure.  Will a story about a major global pandemic really go over well right now?  Hard to say.

That said, we’ve got a teaser and a release date now, and it looks like they are playing it relatively safe with the eerily timely content so far.  The teaser doesn’t mention a virus or global pandemic at all, and seems to focus more on the intense good vs. evil elements of the series. And boy, the evil looks good. Alexander Skarsgård looks damn good as Randall Flagg, guys.  I’m prepared to be uncomfortably attracted to the bad guy in this remake, which absolutely wasn’t the case in the first series (no offense to the actor, but a mullet and denim just didn’t do it for me).

The press release about the teaser, however, does mention the plague, because it’s integral to the plot and sort of hard to avoid:

Stephen King’s apocalyptic vision of a world decimated by plague and embroiled in an elemental struggle between good and evil comes to life in The Stand.

The fate of mankind rests on the frail shoulders of the 108-year-old other Mother Abagail (Whoopi Goldberg) and a handful of survivors. Their worst nightmares are embodied in a man with a lethal smile and unspeakable powers: Randall Flagg, the Dark Man (Alexander Skarsgård).

James Marsden, Amber Heard, Heather Graham, Odessa Young, Jovan Adepo, Owen Teague, Henry Zaga, Brad William Henke, Eion Bailey, Katherine McNamara and Hamish Linklater also star in the new CBS All Access Original Series, premiering December 17!

Despite the eerie timing of the story, I’m still here for it.  Hell, I watched Contagion back in March and that’s even more realistic than the illness in The Stand.  And I kind of want to watch Contagion again!  But not everyone is like me and the subject matter may not be everyone’s cup of tea right now.

It’s smart of their marketing team to acknowledge it but not put it front and center of their material.  That way people know what they’re getting into, but we aren’t forced to have reminders about our current crisis real life crisis at every turn.  It’s not like they planned this to come out in the middle of a pandemic (unlike Michael Bay’s abomination), and I hope the series doesn’t suffer for it.  It deserves a fair shake without the baggage of our real world woes and I hope we can enjoy it for what it is accordingly.
