Nightwing #29 Review, Dark Nights: Metal Tie-in

Nightwing

Issue #29 of Nightwing is a “Dark Nights: Metal” tie-in story.  It opens with Mr. Freeze facing the Batman Who Laughs. Which only confuses Mr. Freeze. Was he talking to Batman or the Joker?  The Batman-like creature only responds that he is, “Something more, from down, down, down among the gnashing teeth. A place colder and darker.”

Then, it cuts to Nightwing and Robin (Damian Wayne) fighting a huge frost monster.  Prior to Dick joining back up with Damian, Green Arrow had been looking after the younger Wayne while Batman is missing. Green Arrow is still with them, along with Killer Crock, and Harley Quinn. An interesting team up for sure! There’s a lot going on in this issue, cutting between Nightwing’s group and the Teen Titans. The Teen Titans are up against a whole army of creepy zombie-like Robins (who only say, “Crow”) who were sent out by the Batman Who Laughs.  Everyone is busy fighting evil versions of themselves and their friends and the villains are teaming up with the good guys to try to stop the threat.

For me, the highlight of this issue is the interactions between Dick and Damian. Damian may be a little obnoxious at times, (and he definitely misses his father) but he gets on well with his older brother and their banter is always fun to read.  My favorite line is when Dick says to Damian about Bruce, “Wherever he is, we’ll find him, like we did before. Like Family.” Dick and Damian are always a fun team up. Damian does respect Dick, even if he doesn’t always show it, and the brotherly banter is comedy gold.

Overall, it was an enjoyable read.  It could definitely be enjoyed even if you haven’t read anything else in the “Dark Nights: Metal” event. This is Bat Family at its best.
