Nightwing Issue 94 Review “The Battle for Bludhaven’s Heart Part 3”

Nightwing issue 94

Nightwing issue 94 is full of action, deceit, betrayal, and a little bit of romance. What more could you want from an issue of a comic? Dick Grayson is getting deeply involved in fighting the evil entities running Bludhaven and they have their eye right back on him. He’s made some powerful enemies both as Dick and Nightwing and things are starting to get real.

There will be some spoilers below.

I had mentioned in my review for Nightwing 93, that I thought that it was very likely that some bad things would be happening sooner rather than later. Well, I was not wrong in my prediction. Dick has made some very powerful people very angry and those who help him are not exempt from their ire. In fact, one of Dick’s confidants learns just what it truly means to fight the good fight with Nightwing.

Nightwing issue 94 begins with the Attorney General questioning one of the cops who had carried out the vandalism of Haven in the previous issue. Meanwhile, Dick’s sister Melinda Zucco helps Nightwing and Barbara Gordon carry out a plan to get some important information on Blockbuster from the police commissioner. Their plan goes without a hitch and a new commissioner, Margaret Sawyer from Metropolis, is quickly appointed by Mayor Zucco.

This of course makes a certain villain unhappy. He was not consulted about the change and is quite angry with Melinda about it. Things are starting to come apart at the seams and I don’t think Dick quite realizes yet how bad things could get. I wouldn’t even call this the calm before the storm. It’s the events leading up to the storm and the first rounds of thunder. Things are really picking up now and I don’t know that anyone is safe!

Writer Tom Taylor once again brings up the hot topic of police in the United States. In Bludhaven, most of the cops are crooked and in cahoots with Blockbuster. They have no problem breaking the law and doing Blockbuster’s bidding. While outside of the Comic’s Code, police corruption is often a topic in comics, right now it seems especially relevant. Tom Taylor never shies away from writing about current real social and political topics in his fictional worlds. And really, this is how it should be. Comics have never shied away from politics, nor do I think they should.

Geraldo Borges is the artist on this issue. And while his art style is completely his own, I must say that it meshes well with Bruno Redondo’s style which is what you want to see. It’s something that works with the current story while still being the unique work of the artist working on the current issue. Borges characters are expressive, and the action panels are a lot of fun. And I may not even be a Dick and Barbara shipper, but I think my favorite panel is the one of the two characters kissing while their dog Haley tries to eat some important paperwork.

As always, Adriano Lucas’ colors tie everything together and contribute to making the Nightwing book as gorgeous as it is. Nighwing isn’t just amazing to read, it is artistically beautiful as well. You can tell that everyone involved in the comic are putting their best work forward. And I would be remiss if I did not acknowledge Wes Abbott’s letters. He continues to be one of the best in the business.

Nightwing issue 94 is definitely when the action really picks up and things start getting dangerous for Nightwing and his team. We also can’t forget about Heartless who is after Dick Grayson as well! On top of all that, Dick is still trying to figure out his relationship with Barbara. So, needless to say, Dick has a lot going on and I’ve got the feeling it’s only going to get more chaotic and dangerous, much sooner rather than later!
