Nintendo warned us. Gamers knew this day was going to come. Yes… Here we are. The Nintendo Switch 2 will get an 11.11% price increase on September 1, 2026, for Western markets.

The base Switch 2’s price will go up from $449.99 to $499.99 in the United States. Canada and Europe will receive a price increase too. Take note that the Nintendo Switch 2 price hike went into effect on May 25, 2026, in Japan.

Here are the September 1, 2026 price changes you need to know:

Europe€469.99€499.99

Why the Nintendo Switch 2 Price Increase is Happening Now?

Well, there are several factors. Nintendo’s official reason for the change is due to market conditions and the global business outlook. This is accurate. The number one reason? AI.

  1. The AI memory chip battle royale: AI data centers are springing up everywhere. Well, those data centers need hardware to run – specifically, commercial-grade computer memory (RAM). Supply chains shifted to create more of this type of RAM. As a result, the consumer-grade RAM supply plummeted. Demand remained the same, increasing cost.
  2. Inflation + Tariffs: An ongoing and unpredictable tariff environment coupled with higher shipping/logistics prices leads to higher costs.
  3. Hardware costs keep rising with no end in sight: Usually, hardware is a money-loser or low-profit product. Software sales make up for the hardware losses and produce profits. Since hardware costs are not getting cheaper over time, Nintendo could not create efficiencies to make profitable hardware.

Early Warning Signs

With that said, Nintendo signaled a price increase may occur even before the Switch 2’s launch. That was way back in 2025.

During that time, the U.S. tariffs served as justification for the potential price hike. This led Nintendo to share lower fiscal guidance on May 8, 2026. Nintendo expected those market conditions to impact its financials. Going forward, Nintendo expects to have an 11% decline in profit for the current fiscal year through March 2027. This is in conjunction with a 17% decrease in Switch 2s sold. However, software sales are expected to increase 23%, from 48.7 million to 60 million units.

This full-year expectation remained unchanged, although the actual Q1 FY2027 results performed better than expected.

The Console Price Increase Trend

I had to think hard to come up with a time when Nintendo increased console prices during a lifecycle. I could not think of one. That’s because it is unprecedented. Usually, console prices drop over time. This “let’s increase the console price mid-generation” is a whole new phenomenon for Nintendo. It is even new for Microsoft and Sony. Both competitors bumped up the price of their consoles for the first time during this generation. Nintendo held out the longest.

Gamers take note. The current market conditions are not going anywhere anytime soon. Therefore, console price increases may become a trend gamers must contend with. That, plus the end of physical game discs, will continue to influence the industry going forward.

This means a greater focus on software as a revenue driver, different ways companies engage with gamers, and, most of all, higher prices.
