Okoye vs Wonder Woman – Fans Make Two Female Warriors Battle Online

With news that Cheetah will be the main villain in Wonder Woman 2, the discussion soon turned toward pitting Diana against various fictional women, with a battle with Wakanda’s Okoye getting the most online traction.

Pitting fictional characters against each other to find out who’ll win isn’t new. The Batman vs. Superman and Superman vs. Goku debates have been going on for decades in the fandom. I enjoy such discussions. It allows the fandom to put forward facts (and opinions) to determine a winner. However, what I’m not a fan of is seeing such discussions being turned into issues about race, misogyny, etc.

Though the Wonder Woman vs. Okoye debate did take a slight turn toward being seen as a race issue, I’m glad the internet (or at least a majority of it) didn’t let things get out of hand. Of course, there are still going to be some trolls who’ll continue trying to make fandoms toxic. But for now, it’s good to see the general fandom (both Marvel and DC) realizing how both women can be celebrated in their own way.

Also, if a character you like is defeated by someone, it doesn’t mean you don’t deserve to continue liking them. And yes, you can defend a character against another, just don’t be rude about it.

Here are some Twitter reactions!

Also, this gem!

Coming to the film side of things, for some reason, Kristen Wigg is in talks to star as Cheetah in the Wonder Woman sequel.

Also, congratulations to Black Panther for entering the list of top 20 U.S. box office grossing films. It’s a well-deserved feat. However again, don’t be rude when sharing your excitement. Breaking into the list shouldn’t be an excuse for going after Wonder Woman.

Black Panther and Wonder Woman are important movies. They both can be celebrated without pushing each other down. I’m looking forward to seeing the sequels.
