Original Star Wars Trilogy Returning to Theaters This Summer

original Star Wars trilogy

Today Vanity Fair broke the news that Lucasfilm was planning on bringing the original Star Wars trilogy to a select number of movie theaters this summer.

At first I looked at the current venue list and asked myself which one I could make it to, because even with all the additional crap, seeing Episodes IV, V, and VI in theaters back in the 90s is still one of the highlights of my life. And yeah, I had a dash of hope that this time they would really do it right and screen the true original Star Wars trilogy.

Sadly, though, that’s not the case. It’s the 1997 versions that fans will be viewing should they nab a ticket on May 4th (of course) via the “Return of the Trilogy” website. However, despite the fact that we still won’t get to see the original original Star Wars trilogy, the fact that this is a partnership between Lucasfilm and the Alamo Drafthouse’s Rolling Roadshow of “famous movies in famous places” may mean it will still all be worth it.

Drafthouse’s press release about the original Star Wars trilogy returning to theaters stated that most showings would be marathons of the three films. Vanity Fair also pointed out that Drafthouse, which is known to be very fan-friendly, “never does anything simply”. They continued on to note that “these screenings will include new video content and ‘special surprises’ that could range from contests to exclusive posters to even, possibly, appearances from the cast.”

I hope by now you’re crossing your fingers that the original Star Wars trilogy is coming to a theater near you. Well, so far the list includes:

August 6—San Francisco, California, at the Warfield
August 6—Kansas City, Missouri, at the Midland Theatre
August 6—Washington, D.C., at Warner Theatre
August 6—Los Angeles, California, at the Theatre at the Ace Hotel
August 6—New York, New York, at the Town Hall
August 6—Miami, Florida, at Olympia Theatre
August 6—San Antonio, Texas, at Majestic Theatre
August 7—New York, New York, at Kings Theatre
August 7—Dallas, Texas, at Majestic Theatre
August 11—13 – Austin, Texas, at the Long Center for the Performing Arts
August 13—Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, at the Keswick Theatre
August 13—Louisville, Kentucky, at Brown Theatre
August 20—Oakland, California, at Paramount Theatre
August 27—Boston, Massachusetts, at the Boston Opera House
Date T.B.D.—Houston, Texas (venue T.B.D.)
Date T.B.D.—Denver, Colorado (venue T.B.D.)

The fact that there are already fifteen cities where fans can have this experience makes me excited about the others they will hopefully announce – and there have already been talks about adding to the list. The movie theaters currently included have, according to Vanity Fair, “massive capacities”…but I suspect that every showing will sell out quick, so don’t forget to mark your calendars for May 4th and keep an eye on the official website.
