Today Netflix released the first trailer for its upcoming original Pacific Rim anime series, Pacific Rim: The Black, which premieres March 4.

Based on Guillermo del Toro’s blockbuster film franchise (Pacific Rim and Pacific Rim: Uprising) from Legendary Entertainment, the Netflix original Pacific Rim anime series continues the story established in the movies, where giant robots fight monsters in a post-apocalyptic world gone mad. Because Guillermo del Toro knows what the people want.

Here is the summary for Pacific Rim: The Black, according to Netflix:

There was a time when Kaiju rose from the Pacific Rim only to encounter gigantic robots, Jaegers, built to fight them back. That time has passed. Now, Australia has been overrun by Kaiju, forcing the evacuation of an entire continent. Left behind, teenage siblings Taylor and Hayley embark on a desperate search for their missing parents, teaching themselves to pilot a battered, long-abandoned Jaeger to help in their quest and give them even the slightest hope of surviving.

While the second film was not as well-received as the first, the Pacific Rim franchise no doubt left its mark on the pop culture landscape, introducing the phrase “drift compatible” into the cultural lexicon, and positing the idea that not all soulmates are romantic in nature. The giant robots, called Jaegers, are piloted by two people who must engage in a mental link, and so they must be completely and totally in sync. The pilot teams include families as well as spouses, because the person who knows you and understands you the best isn’t necessarily a romantic partner. Being ace myself, I love this idea, and it’s one of my favorite aspects of the franchise.

As this series is co-created by Craig Kyle (Thor: Ragnarok) and Greg Johnson (X-Men: Evolution), I have high hopes for it. Ragnarok is one of my favorite MCU films, and I was obsessed with X-Men: Evolution when I was in college.

The animation production studio is Polygon Pictures, known for the Netflix Original Anime Series Levius, the Ajin: Demi-Human series, and the Godzilla Netflix Original Anime Movie Trilogy.

Pacific Rim: The Black will begin streaming worldwide on Netflix on March 4, 2021. Season 1 will consist of seven 30-minute episodes.
