Pedro Pascal and Ethan Hawke Are Queer Lovers In “Strange Way of Life” Trailer!

Even though I’m disappointed that it is a short film, I’m still looking forward to the Pedro Pascal and Ethan Hawke starring queer Western drama Strange Way of Life. Written and directed by Pedro Almodóvar, it will premiere during this year’s Cannes Film Festival.

In Strange Way of Life, Pascal stars as Silva, while Hawke plays the role of Sheriff Jake. From what I could understand from the synopsis and the footage from the trailer, Silva and Jake worked together as hired gunmen when they were younger, and things between them got romantic. Now, after 25 years, Silva (a rancher) gets the invite to pay Silva a visit. And while the two seem to rekindle their romance, Jake apparently had Silva come over for a particular reason.

And, of course, their reunion is filled with drama. Jake gets injured. And he also has some very intense emotions when Silva brings up how Jake never loved him or anyone else. Ufff!!! My heart!!!

Along with Hawke and Pascal, the cast includes José Condessa, Jason Fernández, Sara Sálamo, Erenice Lohan, Pedro Casablanc, George Steane, and Manu Ríos.

You can watch the trailer below. And while some people on Twitter have shared that they didn’t like the footage not being “grainy” enough for a Western, I’m personally okay with Almodóvar‘s choice. Just give me this short film right now!

For those who might now know, Almodóvar was given the opportunity to direct Brokeback Mountain. However, he didn’t take the offer because he feared he wouldn’t have the creative freedom to construct the movie the way he wanted. This short film is supposed to be Almodóvar’s method of telling a queer Western story his way.

I have a feeling that unlike Brokeback Mountain, the ending of Strange Way of Life will be a happy one.

After having its premiere at the 2023 Cannes Film Festival in May, the short will be released by BTeam in Spanish theatres on May 26, 2023. Sony Pictures Classics has procured the rights to release it in the United States and certain other markets.
