‘Penny Dreadful’ Ends Series With Season Three Finale

Penny DreadfulIt is a sad day for Penny Dreadful fans. We just celebrated the two-part season three finale, and wake up to news that the series is over.

Let’s face it, those of us who are active viewers of the show knew that something like this would likely happen, particularly since there was no renewal news in sight. When episode 309 aired, it felt like a series finale, from the different opening credits to the use of a simple “The End” on the screen at the close of the episode.

According to an interview with Entertainment Weekly, show creator John Logan and Showtime CEO David Nevins revealed that they knew Penny Dreadful would be a short series. Accordingly, they always had an end in sight. It wasn’t until the middle of season two that they knew the end would be season three.

As a huge fan of the show, I am very sad that this is the end. Admittedly, the subject of the series was always very ambitious, and the focus of the show seemed to vary from season to season. To me, the series still had a lot of potential story to play out, but I respect the decision to end things. Through Gothic stories like Frankenstein, Dracula, and The Picture of Dorian Gray, audiences were given the ability to walk through various characters and see how they would all connect in the same universe.

I will always remember the brilliant performances by Eva Green, Rory Kinnear, and the others. Vanessa Ives will always be one of the best female characters of television, and I am very glad to have been a witness to that. This series was about family and friendship mostly, but also heavily dealt with issues like morality, feminism, transgender and queer, humanity, and immortality. It was a strange but fun ride at every turn.

What do you think of the cancellation news for Penny Dreadful? Are you sad, or was it the right decision? Let us know!
