Thunderful Publishing and indie developer Wishfully Studios have revealed they partnered with Geoff Keighley at Summer Game Fest Kickoff Live to premiere Wishfully’s debut title Planet of Lana. The upcoming indie game, featuring hand-painted visuals, is planning a 2022 release.

Planet of Lana has been described as a “cinematic puzzle adventure” that will offer plays an “unforgettable” story as well as an “epic” soundtrack. The title will launch exclusively on Xbox Series X/S, Xbox One, and PC via Steam and Windows 10 Store in late 2022. I know it’s a long wait, but I’m still excited. The visuals really got to me. I’m already rooting for Lana and her black cat-like pet named Mui.

The story is set in an alien world (duh!). Lana and Mui will have to embark on a rescue mission to save Lana’s sister. The gameplay is what you would expect from a side-scrolling platformer. Players can also look forward to solving tons of puzzles and encountering situations requiring stealth. You will also need to have Lana and Mui work together to complete objectives.

The stunning visuals feature a combination of “hand-drawn artwork, complex parallax layering, and subtle use of 3D graphics” to make it look like the game’s set in an “interactive” painting. For those interested in really knowing how the game will look on their systems, well, on high-end PCs and Xbox Series X, Planet of Lana will run at a native resolution of 4K (2160p) at 60 frames per second. More details will be shared later.

Here’s the trailer!

I did get a cinematic feel from the trailer, especially during how the opening sequence played out. And as I’ve said before, the visuals really got to me. Everything looks stunning, even during the creepy and tense moments.

As for Thunderful Publishing, founded in Gothenburg, Sweden in 2017, it’s part of the Thunderful Group, which includes development studios Zoink Games and Image & Form, and publisher Rising Star Games. It’s behind a number of award-winning games, including Steamworld Quest: Hand of Gilgamesh (which I’ve reviewed).

Wishfully Studio is a Swedish indie game studio founded in 2018, aiming to create games that leave a lasting impact. As far as my opinion goes, Planet of Lana does look like an offering that will well-received by the gaming community. I’m definitely looking forward to playing it.

You can Wishlist it on Steam right now. You can visit the game’s official website here.
