Fans of The CW’s live-action Nancy Drew series have a new spinoff to look forward to. Tom Swift will premiere on the network come May 31, 2022. The debut will follow a new episode of Superman & Lois.

Tom Swift getting a direct-to-series order was first announced back in August of 2021. While I couldn’t get into the Nancy Drew series, I’m kind of intrigued by the upcoming spinoff. I will definitely be checking out the debut episode to determine if I will be tuning in every week.

Based on the book series of the same name, the upcoming show will follow Tom Swift (Tian Richards) trying to deal with a world of sci-fi conspiracy after the disappearance of his father. As a brilliant inventor with access to a whole lot of wealth and resources, Tom will take it upon himself to uncover a mystery while being pursued by an Illuminati-scale group.

Tom’s best friend Zenzi is played by Ashleigh Murray. Zenzi has been described as someone who helps keep Tom grounded. She is also quite the business visionary.

In the romance department, we have Tom’s bodyguard named Isaac (Marquise Vilsón). Isaac’s got some “simmering feelings” for Tom. There’s also Rowan (Albert Mwangi), a mysterious and dangerous character who has a hidden agenda and “undeniable mutual chemistry” with Tom.

I’m here for this kind of queer romantic drama… I think. I mean, I’m a bit cautious because it’s The CW we’re talking about after all.

With Tom trying to uncover the truth, his relationship with his mother Lorraine (April Parker Jones) gives rise to more conflict because she wants Tom to take his father’s place in elite Black society.

For those who might not know, Tom made his debut during Nancy Drew season 2 episode 15 ‘The Celestial Visitor’. Without giving away spoilers (for those who might be planning to watch the Nancy Drew series), the episode had Tom and Nancy working together, of course. It also had Tom talk about his complicated relationship with his father who’s unaware Tom’s gay. However, by the end of the episode, Tom’s able to come out to his father and strengthen their relationship.

From CBS Studios and Fake Empire, Tom Swift has been co-created by Nancy Drew EPs Melinda Hsu Taylor and Noga Landau and Empire writer Cameron Johnson, who also serve as executive producers along with Josh Schwartz, Stephanie Savage, and Lis Rowinski.

While we’re on the subject, Nancy Drew aired the season 3 finale on January 28, 2022. The series currently consists of 49 episodes. The series was renewed for a fourth installment on March 22, 2022.
