The Old Guard 2 is getting ready to start filming and the upcoming queer-led action flick about immortals has added Uma Thurman and Henry Golding to the cast!

Even though Netflix announced a sequel to the 2020 movie in January of 2021, I was still a bit worried about it ever becoming reality due to the lack of updates and it being very queer (something that severely lacks in the action genre). However, with Thurman (Kill Bill) and Golding (Crazy Rich Asians) being signed on, I can calm down a bit.

Of course, OG cast members Charlize Theron, Kiki Layne, Matthias Schoenaerts, Marwan Kenzari, Luca Marinelli, Veronica Ngo, and Chiwetel Ejiofor are returning.

Based on the graphic novel series of the same name, created by Greg Rucka and Leandro Fernández, The Old Guard went on to become one of Netflix’s most-watched movies. And that’s saying something because of how queer-inclusive it is. As I keep on saying, the entire world is open to watching queer-inclusive stories as long as they are well-written and enjoyable.

And as someone who has read the graphic novel series, I think it is safe to say that viewers should get ready for even more queer relationship drama because of how the first film ended.

The Old Guard 2 will be directed by Victoria Mahoney, with Rucka writing the script. Rucka’s also the executive producer on the project. According to Theron’s latest interview with Variety, filming will begin next week.

I’m excited about our team coming back and having had all this time to really think about what we want the next story to be,” she stated. “It’s a big ask to want everybody involved to do action that’s raising the bar of what we did last time. It takes time and energy and effort and everybody has put that forth. I want to see the fruits of that labor.”

While Thurman is iconic for her work in the Kill Bill franchise, Golding showed his action chops in the Snake Eyes: G.I Joe Origins solo movie that was released in July 2021. And for those wondering, yes, Golding has played a queer character in the 2019 film Monsoon.

Are you excited about The Old Guard 2?

I sure am!

  1. Not only queer representation, but more Muslim representation as well! Joe (Yusuf), a Maghrebi Muslim man will likely be joined by the new character Moose (Mustafa King), who in the comic is a black Muslim man, but if played by Golding, will be Malaysian Muslim. I’m SO glad Netflix decided to continue this series, it’s so important.
