Dark Star Pictures will be releasing two very interesting queer films next month. Both The Neighbor and Horseplay will have a theatrical release come June 2, 2023.

After their theatrical debut in the USA on June 2, 2023, The Neighbor will be available on DVD on June 6, 2023, via Dark Star Pictures and Uncork’d Entertainment. Horseplay can be owned on DVD and Digital on June 13, 2023.

Let’s talk about the queer drama The Neighbor first. From director Pasquale Marrazzo, the film was received well during the festival circuit. It stars Michelle Costabile and Jacopo Costantini, with the score being by award-winning Italian composer Teho Teardo (House of Gucci).

The Neighbor has been described as an intense drama with some dark themes. The life of the lead queer couple drastically changes after facing continuous bullying and homophobia from neo-Nazi skinheads. The narrative deals with a family not being accepting of their child’s queerness as well as the romantic relationship they are in.

Just a warning. The trailer is really grim. And that’s why I have my fingers crossed that the young queer couple gets a happy ending and The Neighbor doesn’t end up being yet another sad queer drama (I mean, nothing against the creative team, but we really do have way too many of those already).

If sad queer drama isn’t for you, how about a well-received film that talks about homoeroticism, masculinity, homophobia, and sexuality?

From Marco Berger (Mariposa, Taekwondo), Horseplay stars Bruno Giganti, Agustin Machta, Franco De La Puente, Ivan Masliah.

The story is about a group of friends who decide to enjoy the summer holiday together. Judging from the trailer, you can tell that this movie will have a lot of skin. But not only that, things get amped up when jealousy and violence get involved. There’s a messy triangle involving a repressed gay guy, a closeted bisexual guy, and a homophobe.

I’m getting major Taekwondo vibes from Horseplay. So, I’m not exactly sure why Berger decided to, apparently, make the same movie again. Hmmm.

Anyway, I wanted to put both The Neighbor and Horseplay on your radar in case you were interested in checking them out next month.

Feel free to share your thoughts with us.
