Netflix will be releasing the anime adaptation of the popular Record of Ragnarok manga sometime in June of this year. Are you ready to witness an action-heavy battle between humans and Gods? I sure am.

The announcement was made at Tokyo’s AnimeJapan 2021 Expo. Along with Record of Ragnarok, information about The Way of the Househusband (set to debut April 8, 2021), and the Resident Evil: Infinite Darkness CG-animated series was also shared.

The upcoming anime is based on a manga by Azychika, Shinya Umemura, and Takumi Fukui. The premise deals with 13 gods and 13 human champions battling it out to decide the fate of humanity.

Basically, every 1000 years, all the gods of the world gather in heaven to attend the “Conference of Mankind Survival”. Due to the continuous foolishness exhibited by mankind, the gods decide to end humanity. However, Brunhilde objects and proposes a 1-on-1 battle between gods and humans. The first team to win 7 of the 13 battles will be deemed victories. What’s interesting is that the human champions can be selected from across history.

Here’s the trailer!

The anime is in production at Graphinica under director Sato Masaki, who is also credited as character designer. Warner Bros. Japan is serving as a series producer. Netflix will release the anime across the globe come June. It’s part of the 40 new anime titles Netflix plans to release this year (doubling the amount the streaming service released in 2020).

The voice cast and their respective characters are:

  • Brunhilde: Miyuki Sawashiro
  • Göll: Tomoyo Kurosawa
  • Lü Bu: Tomokazu Seki
  • Adam: Soma Saito
  • Kojiro Sasaki: Kazuhiro Yamaji
  • Thor: Hikaru Midorikawa
  • Zeus: Wataru Takagi
  • Poseidon: Takahiro Sakurai
  • Hermes: Junichi Suwabe
  • Heimdall: Yukihiro Nozuyama
  • Odin: Show Hayami
  • Shiva: Tatsuhisa Suzuki
  • Aphrodite: Rie Tanaka
  • Loki: Yoshitsugu Matsuoka
  • Odin: Show Hayami
  • Ares: Hinata Tadokoro
  • Huginn: Taisuke Nakano
  • Muninn: Tomohiro Yamaguchi

Seeing all these different gods coming together reminds me of the Percy Jackson series by author Rick Riordan. I hope the live-action adaptation is released soon on Disney Plus because the fandom is ready.

As for the anime, I’m looking forward to watching Record of Ragnarok. It’s coming across as a fun mash-up of action, comedy, and certain theological ideas.
