SYFY is a mainstay at New York Comic Con, fielding panels and having a rather large presence for the past couple of years. The SYFY Fan Lounge is a welcome retreat from the craziness of the show floor, and the Live Stage offers a variety of panels for fans of all aspects of popular culture. This year, one of the new shows SYFY brought to preview for attendees was Resident Alien, starring Alan Tudyk.

Resident Alien is a twisted and comedic fish-out-of-water story that follows a crash-landed alien named Harry (Alan Tudyk) who, after taking on the identity of a small-town Colorado doctor, slowly begins to wrestle with the moral dilemma of his secret mission on Earth — ultimately asking the question, “Are human beings worth saving?” Based on the popular Dark Horse comics series by co-creators Peter Hogan and Steve Parkhouse, the series is a genre-bending exploration of humanity. It’s a mix of comedy and drama with a bit of murder mystery thrown in, with the uncommon slant that, for once, the audience knows more than the characters.

I got the opportunity to speak to the cast and crew at NYCC 2019. Stars Alan Tudyk, Corey Reynolds, and Sara Tomko were on hand, alongside executive producer Chris Sheridan and comic co-creator and series writer Peter Hogan, to talk about the upcoming series and what we can expect. The conversations ranged from whether or not aliens are out there in the universe (Reynolds is firmly in the camp that believes we are not alone) to the difficulty of humanizing a toxic relationship to finding the balance between comedy and drama in a story like this.

Resident Alien will air on SYFY. As of this posting, a premiere date is still unknown.
