Boruto: Naruto Next Generations 1×79 Review: Reunion with Mitsuki

Boruto Naruto Next Generations episode 79 Reunion with Mitsuki anime review

With the focus of the current arc falling back on Mitsuki, I am looking forward to seeing what Boruto and his friends decide to do after the events that occurred in ‘Reunion with Mitsuki.’ Orochimaru’s son is clearly planning something!

One of the things I liked seeing in ‘Reunion with Mitsuki’ is the power difference between the new antagonists and Boruto’s team. Even though Boruto and the rest are Genins with impressive skills, they are no match for skilled Jonin-level ninjas. Both Kokuyou and Sekiei serve as awesome opponents for our young heroes. Shikadai realized his only option was to retreat from their battle with Kokuyou. And even though Boruto summoned Garaga (who refused to help until the last minute), he and Salad still couldn’t defeat Sekiei.

The difference in power has me looking forward to seeing how Boruto and the rest decide to take the antagonists down. As far as we know, other than Kokuyou and Sekiei, the villainous team includes a girl who knows genjutsu, a guy with red hair, and then the main boss. There is also a small army of Akutas our heroes have to worry about.

I hope to see some of the grownups (likely Sai, Konohamaru, and Moegi) offering backup in the upcoming episodes to take down the current foes. Having Naruto, Sasuke, or Sakura show up for support is going to be overkill because the current anime villains don’t stand a chance against them.

As for Mitsuki’s decision to continue his journey with Kokuyou and Sekiei, I can understand why he is looking for answers to certain questions. Mitsuki feels a strong pull towards Boruto. For him, Boruto is his sun. With Mitsuki grasping the importance of free will because of spending time with Boruto, it makes sense why Orochimaru’s son would want to understand him being attracted to Boruto. Is wanting to be with Boruto something Mitsuki wants or is it something Orochimaru implanted in him?

And yes, Mitsuki’s pull toward Boruto comes across as queer. Mitsuki even has Boruto’s picture right by his bed. I don’t know how the writers will handle this, but considering they have established Orochimaru as genderqueer, I do think Mitsuki’s feelings will be handled in a somewhat respectable manner (for a kid’s anime series). Or at least I hope so.

Furthermore, my theory is Mitsuki is on a secret mission which was given to him by Orochimaru. That is why he decided to go to the Land of Earth. I wouldn’t be surprised if his mission is to know as much as he can about the origins or Kokuyou and the rest (they’re scientifically-created beings like Mitsuki) and bring a stop to the creation process.

Some thoughts and questions

  • Wasn’t Garaga supposed to eat Boruto if he couldn’t bring Mitsuki back to the village?
  • Chocho saying the most beautiful girl arrives late at the party only to have Inojin arrive the latest was a good joke.
  • I am a fan of Chocho and Salad’s friendship!
