Reverie 1×1 Review: Apertus

Reverie Season 1 Episode 1 Apertus review

Mickey Fisher’s new show Reverie can be described as a series having interesting potential. What remains to be seen is whether or not the said potential can be realized as the series progresses. ‘Apertus’ laid most of the groundwork. So, let’s see what happens next.

Virtual reality and the debate about humans missing out on important real-life connections because of technology aren’t something new. What matters in such content in the way it is presented. Does it have exceptional writing? Interesting characters? After watching ‘Apertus,’ I am happy to report I want to know more about the world Mickey Fisher has built. So much can be done even if the show follows a procedural format on NBC.

The main character Mara Kint is a former hostage negotiator. However, she left the force after experiencing a tragic ordeal involving her brother-in-law shooting her sister and niece. Actress Sara Shahi brings forward a likable Mara Kint. You know what she has gone through and want her to become better. She ends up working for Onira-Tech after her former boss (and now a senior consultant at Onira-Tech) reaches out to her to help with a problem.

Turns out, some people don’t want to come back to reality because of the perfect worlds they are able to create through Reverie. ‘Apertus’ deals with Mara entering the reverie of a man who doesn’t want to let go of his dead wife.

I liked how the show explained how Reverie worked. The implant required to access the software is creepy-looking, and you immediately know something bad is going to happen when Mara is injected with it. The dreamscapes the software is able to create is where this show can play around with a lot. Reverie can allow us to see different worlds as well as the reasons behind why someone might not want to come back to reality. There’s also a lot of potential of having prolific guest stars join the show.

Some thoughts and questions:

  • Considering Mara is now working for him, I wonder if we will get some scene between her and Charlie over how the police sirens made her brother-in-law shoot his family.
  • While I liked the connection between Alexis and DYLAN, the AI creeps me out.
  • Kudos to Reverie for having a very diverse cast!
  • We need to see people flying in a reverie or two!
  • The blurring of the line between VR and reality is going to be very interesting.
  • I would like some good reasons behind why Onira-Tech can’t just force people to come out from their reverie. Shouldn’t there be some kind of easier failsafe in place considering the kind of technology being used instead of sending another person in?

Did you watch the premiere of Reverie? What did you think of ‘Apertus’? Feel free to share your thoughts with us.
