Robin Issue 10 Review: “Mother of the Demon”

Robin Issue 10

Robin issue 10 takes Damian Wayne back to the past – at least meditatively. Mother Soul is not happy with her great grandson and wants him to understand his family history and where he comes from. Damian isn’t too impressed, but at least he is finally getting some answers!

There will be some spoilers below!

While issue 9 felt like a huge turning point in Damian Wayne’s hero journey, Robin issue 10 gives us a bigger understanding of where Damian comes from. It gives us some answers on how the League of Lazarus fits in with the League of Shadows, the League of Assassins, and just why Damian has never heard of the League of Lazarus until now. Not to give too much away, but he had never heard of them before by design.

Robin issue 10 starts with Mother Soul in the past, inviting Damian to come pray to the Demon with her. Ra’s al Ghul shows up to speak with his mother, but she suddenly dies in his arms. Damian tries to comfort his grandfather, but Mother Soul revives and attacks him. Damian accuses her of not showing his family’s true history, but she claims that her magic that connects to their demon blood allows them to see their real family’s history.

Meanwhile, the rest of the contestants are on Lazarus Island and are unsure what they should do to help Damian who is currently in a deep meditative state. The comic continues to delve into Mother Soul and Ra’s past. Mother Soul’s magic clashes with Ra’s reliance and trust in science, but he still uses the Lazarus pit to bring her back.

Damian is soon able to get the upper hand with Mother Soul and breaks out of the meditative state. That only serves to enrage her further, but thankfully Damian has a whole support group behind him and some additional people who drop in to help. There’s a lot going on and Damian is right in the middle of it all!

Writer Joshua Williamson is really taking a lot of care delving into the history of the al Ghul’s. I really appreciate the great care he takes with the characters. I feel like this story arc will help Damian to better accept and understand the al Ghul part of himself. After all, he isn’t just the son of the Bat. I believe Williamson is building up a large and important mythos for Damian especially and I’m super excited to see it.

The art for Robin issue 10 is once again done by Roger Cruz with Norm Rapmund on inks. I am continuing to enjoy Cruz’s style. It fits very well with the Robin comic. The facial expressions on his characters in particular stand out. His drawing of the Demon statue early in the comic is especially cool looking. As always, Luis Guerrero’s colors highlight the characters and Troy Peteri’s letters fit the story perfectly. It’s just a very visually pleasing comic to read.

Robin issue 10 does a great job answering some of the questions Damian had and gives us more insight into not only Robin, but his family as well. It’ll be interesting to see how this story continues to play out and how Damian will fit in when generations of his family are fighting each other. As always, I’m definitely looking forward to the next issue!
