Rogue meets the chopping board…Out of ‘X-Men: Days of Future Past’

Rogue ComicIt seems director Bryan Singer wants to be as open as possible regarding his next film X-Men: Days of Future Past. It has been confirmed that the mutant Rogue, played by Anna Paquin, has been cut from the film during editing. Though such things happen in film making, it does give rise to a lot of concerns regarding the film just being a big cluster of superheroes and not having much story.

Bryan admitted to the whole thing during an interview with Entertainment Weekly. The full quote reads:

“Through the editing process, the sequence became extraneous,” explains Singer. “It’s a really good sequence and it will probably end up on the DVD so people can see it. But like many things in the editing process, it was an embarrassment of riches and it was just one of the things that had to go. Unfortunately, it was the one and only sequence Anna Paquin was in, the Rogue character was in. Even though she’s in the materials and part of the process of making the film, she won’t appear in it.”

“She did a fantastic job,” says the director. “She was awesome in the sequence. She’s a brilliant actress. I would work with her in a heartbeat.”

Rogue Movie

As I’ve already mentioned, scenes do meet the chopping board, but deleting a scene that’s the only one in which a character is featured doesn’t feel right. Rogue is a famous character from the X-Men franchise. She also had a lot to do in the first two X-Men films as well. X-Men: The Last Stand saw her role diminish, but I wasn’t expecting her not to be in DoFP, especially when she was present in the ComicCon panel and in the trailer as well. I guess the whole rescue sequence won’t be in the film anymore. So, what does that say about Rogue? If that was her only scene, would that mean she would’ve died anyway in the film? The whole DoFP setup has just gotten grimmer. Who else is going to die in the film or is already dead? I hate to think about it.

With most of the original cast gone, I think DoFP will eventually ‘evolve’ (as Bryan puts it) into a film that should’ve been titled ‘Wolverine and the First Class’. For me, Fox made a big mistake not thinking about a proper plan for the film franchise. Marvel Studios thought about everything and you can see the continuity in the Marvel Cinematic Universe they have created. With Fox, even with six X-Men films under their belt, nothing makes sense. X-Men: Days of Future Past might change things. It’s even being considered a reboot of some sort. X-Men: Age of Apocalypse has been confirmed as well, but that will most probably star the First Class X-Men, and possibly Wolverine…again!

I think Fox needs to make a choice. They need to decide if they want to continue with the original film characters or the new ones. Because trying to ‘meld’ the timelines doesn’t give much screen time to the characters we already love, Rogue being one of the casualties.

What do you think about Rogue being cut from the film? Please share.
