Ruby and Sapphire’s Story “The Answer” Being Released as a Children’s Book

Ruby and Sapphire's Story Steven Universe The Answer

When “The Answer” aired back at the beginning of January, it immediately became my favorite SU episode of all time. So my excitement knew no bounds when I heard that Ruby and Sapphire’s story is going to be made into a book – and even better, a *children’s* book!

I say “even better” because “The Answer” very much has the possibility of being a stand-alone tale about consent and love between two female-coded characters – something beautiful, and a subject that is still behind the times in children’s literature. The fact that Ruby and Sapphire’s story is likely to be the subject of a mainstream children’s book is amazing for that reason alone.

Amazon’s official description only makes me want my copy more (and sooner!):

Thousands of years ago, there were two Gems called Ruby and Sapphire who lived on the faraway Gem Homeworld planet. Even though one Gem could see into the future, neither could predict that their paths would come together in such an incredible way! This is the story of Garnet, the leader of the Crystal Gems, and how she came to live on planet Earth. Rebecca Sugar, creator of Steven Universe, tells this love story with plenty of warmth and humor.

Of course it’s not surprising that the ever-awesome Rebecca Sugar is writing the adaptation of Ruby and Sapphire’s story herself; add to that the fact that original Steven Universe crew members Elle Michalka and Tiffany Ford are doing the illustrations, and you’ve got the perfect ingredients for what is sure to be an all-around gorgeous book. In fact, fellow Geekiary writer KK admitted, “I slammed the pre-order button so hard the mouse stuck”. Let’s just say that I wasn’t far behind her.

“The Answer” is set for release on September 6th of this year. I don’t know about anyone else, but I can’t wait to have a hardcover version of Ruby and Sapphire’s story in my hands.
