“Sailor Moon Eternal” 2-Part Anime Film Project Scheduled To Open In 2020!

Sailor Moon fans have more content to look forward to in 2020! The Sailor Moon Eternal 2-part anime film project is scheduled to open sometime next year.

Toei announced at the “Usagi Special Birthday Party 2019” event that the previously announced new two-part anime film project for the highly-popular Sailor Moon franchise will debut in Japan come 2020.

Toei is streaming a special video for the upcoming film project, now titled Bishōjo Senshi Sailor Moon Eternal (Pretty Guardians Sailor Moon Eternal The MOVIE).

The video features the main cast. Details about specific release dates for the movies haven’t been shared yet.

The project’s cast and staff have been confirmed. Fans will be excited to learn Naoko Takeuchi (the original manga creator) has been credited with the project’s content as well as supervision. Chiaki Kon is returning from the anime’s third season to direct the two films. Furthermore, Kazuko Tadano, the character designer for the original Sailor Moon anime, is back. The scripts are from Kazuyuki Fudeyasu.

The returning cast includes:

• Kotono Mitsuishi as Usagi Tsukino/Sailor Moon
• Hisako Kanemoto as Ami Mizuno/Sailor Mercury
• Rina Satou as Rei Hino/Sailor Mars
• Ami Koshimizu as Makoto Kino/Sailor Jupiter
• Shizuka Itou as Minako Aino/Sailor Venus
• Misato Fukuen as Chibi-Usa/Sailor Chibi Moon

This two-part film project has been created instead of a fourth season for the Sailor Moon Crystal anime series.

The said anime series premiered in 2014 with the third season concluding in 2016. A total of 39 episodes have aired.

The upcoming anime movies will cover the “Dead Moon” arc of Takeuchi’s original manga. The development of this project was first announced back in 2017 at the same event.

I’m okay with this franchise continuing with anime films. It reminds me of how the original Digimon anime franchise came with the very enjoyable 6-part Adventure tri. movie series.
