SAILOR MOON R Theatrical Screening Coming in 2017

Sailor Moon R

SAILOR MOON R: The Movie is scheduled for a theatrical release in January 2017.  The film will play on over 300 screens across the United States.

The special SAILOR MOON R: The Movie screening will also feature the North American theatrical debut of the original Sailor Moon short, MAKE UP! SAILOR GUARDIANS.  The majority of the screenings will be dubbed, but select theaters will feature be in Japanese with original subtitles.  A full list of theaters participating in the event can be found on Viz’s website.  The special screenings are being brought to the North American audience by VIZ Media and Toei Animation Inc. along with Los Angeles-based film distribution company, ELEVEN ARTS.  The limited engagement screenings will begin in late January.  This will mark the first time SAILOR MOON R: The Movie has hit the big screen uncut in North America.

Sailor Moon has always had a special place in the hearts of fans who grew up with the series. Now, with a new generation of viewers, the unending love for these characters is very gratifying,” said Masayuki Endo, President of Toei Animation Inc. “We are excited to welcome everyone to attend these special screenings and experience SAILOR MOON R: THE MOVIE in the way it was meant to be experienced.”

Sailor Moon will always be an anime classic.  It was my first introduction to anime way back in 1993 when it became a crucial part of my morning cartoon schedule.  My love of anime has only grown since then.  It’s a testament to the impact of the story and characters that the fandom is still going strong over twenty years after the series began.  Even though I’ve since moved on to other genres besides shoujo and magical school girls, Sailor Moon will always be part of my childhood and my geek upbringing.

Sailor Moon holds a special place in the hearts of multiple generations of anime fans and these exciting premieres present the film in a vivid way befitting its celebrated status among viewers,” says Charlene Ingram, Senior Marketing Manager, Animation. “Fans will love the new, uncut English dub and we’ve worked closely with our partners at Toei Animation and ELEVEN ARTS to bring SAILOR MOON R: THE MOVIE to many major cities and metropolitan area across the U.S. We look forward to audiences enjoying all the action and drama as the Sailor Guardians face their new foe on the big screen!”

  1. Thanks for sharing! It’s good to see that the myth of SM still lives on <3 (even if it differs so much from the awesome manga ;-P)
