All This Sansa Stark News Has Me Worried

SansaStarkNews

As we approach the Game of Thrones season 6 premiere rumors are flying all over the place, but all of the Sansa Stark news is actually freaking me out.

The first it of Sansa Stark news to catch my attention was actress Sophie Turner admitting that she wants Sansa to be killed off.  In an interview with the Wall Street Journal, Turner says:

“I don’t want to survive.  If you’re on ‘Game of Thrones’ and you don’t have a cool death scene, then what’s the point?”

This statement in and of itself is pretty innocuous.  Surely this was just an off hand comment and not a hint that her character may soon meet her doom?  Right?  But then, oh man, the Sansa tidbits have begun pouring out all across the Internet and my mind is jumping to some wild conclusions.

In a recent interview with Entertainment Weekly, the actress seemed to add some positive vibes to Sansa’s fate this season.

“This is the season I’m most excited for. Sansa’s coming into her own and standing up for herself.”

This sounds great, right?  Sansa used to be a generally disliked character (I always loved her), but her character arc won over many long time haters by the end of season five.  Hearing Turner sound so upbeat about her arc for this season does lift my spirits.  But then I remember something she said in defense of Sansa’s brutal assault at the hands of Ramsay Bolton.  In an interview with Time she said that she “secretly loved” the scene.  She went on to explain:

“I think Sansa has gone through a lot, and has developed skills from Margaery and others. But she’s just as strong as before. What’s she’s been doing this whole series is just getting by without doing anything totally radical because that could totally change her situation—she could die.”

That’s a good point, yes, but I disagree that she had to be horrifically violated in order to get to that strong point in her character arc.  I felt that was a totally unnecessary tangent and I’m still not over it.  I seriously debated just walking from the show after that scene, but there’s still enough that I love about the show that I couldn’t give it up completely.

Once my mind connects her defense of Sansa’s assault with her saying she wants to see Sansa die and that this is the season she’s “most excited for” my brain automatically goes “oh crap, Sansa is going to stand up for herself and then get brutally murdered.”

Just me? Am I overthinking this?  Someone talk me down here.  I must be connecting dots that aren’t there… right? Please don’t kill my Sansa Stark.  Please.

  1. I was profiled for a company newsletter and grossly misquoted (like, the quote was not even out of context, I literally never said any of it), so I don’t trust anything I see in print. I mean, it’s always a possibility, because GRRM hates happiness and wants all of his fans to be miserable, but I think it’s too early to try and speculate what’s going to happen this season. Plus, I would not put it past Sophie to troll people.

  2. Gee if this show is already depressing enough…unfortunately all of these might be true, since everyone sooner or later has to die in GOT y’know (that’s the thing I hate most out of it, also cos when you see it again & again multiple times you’re kind of desensitized even in the face of horror right? I won’t ever understand the appeal honestly, of making something just for the shock-value).
I’m only curious to know if people will be still ecstatic even if going forward with the plot the show will part ways with the books creating their very ownt thing: my educated guess is that it’ll succeed since there’s no other similar show around as direct competition that I’m aware of.

Moreover I’ve still not forgotten them about the macho-approach TPTB have with this show, & like you also about Sansa’s uneccessary rape. Overall I still think GOT is overrated, even if I know I’m in the minority since all the hype it has, but still I’m entitled of my own thinking, & bold doesn’t necessarily mean “awesome”. (I think this way cos IMO it hasn’t truly invented anything, as e.g. a Star Wars did for its era: it uses the brutality we already knew from ancient times combined with a dejà-vù fantasy theme, but without original characters, not even in terms of LGBT etc, I save it only for its cinematography which is worth of a movie more than a tv series).

Sorry for the rant but just don’t hold your breath for this show, or it’ll crash your expectations in the end (besides it’s one of those shows that doesn’t care about what fans would prefer, so.. ;-/).
