“Sasaki to Miyano” Anime Film to Hit Japanese Theaters in 2023

Sasaki to Miyano film

When the last episode of Sasaki to Miyano aired this past March, it was revealed that there would be a new anime, with details to come later. Fans speculated as to whether this would be a new season, an OVA, or something else. Well, now we know the answer; Sasaki to Miyano: Sotsugyo-hen (Graduation Chapter) is a new anime film that will open in theaters in Japan sometime in 2023.

Sasaki to Miyano: Sotsugyo-hen will be shown alongside an anime adaptation of the spinoff manga Hirano and Kagiura. Many of the original staff and voice cast will be returning for the film, including director Shinji Ishihira (Studio DEEN), assistant director Takahiro Ueno, screenwriter Yoshiko Nakamura, character designer Maki Fujii, and composer Kana Shibue.

Returning cast members include:

  • Yusuke Shirai as Shumei Sasaki
  • Sōma Saitō as Yoshikazu Miyano
  • Yoshitsugu Matsuoka as Taiga Hirano
  • Yūki Ono as Jiro Ogasawara
  • Yūma Uchida as Masato Hanzawa
  • Ryohei Arai as Tasuku Kuresawa
  • Mitsuhiro Ichiki as Gonzaburo Tashiro
  • Nobunaga Shimazaki as Akira Kagiura

In other news, an OVA will be bundled with the ninth volume that releases on July 27. The original episode is called “Koi ni Kizuku Mae no Chotto Shita Hanashi” and will introduce Shimazaki as Hirano’s oft-mentioned but little seen (in the anime) roommate Kagiura.

There will also be a stage play adaptation of the main manga running in Tokyo from July 23 to July 31.

Sasaki to Miyano premiered in January and ran for 12 episodes. It originally streamed on Funimation but has since moved over to Crunchyroll. We didn’t review it weekly, but I did include it in my shmoopy Valentine’s Day rec list this past February! It’s a sweet and adorable romance that was a balm to my soul with everything that has been going on in the world for the past few years.

It all started like a typical old-school boys’ love plotline—bad-boy senior meets adorably awkward underclassman, one of them falls in love, and so on and so forth. But although Miyano is a self-proclaimed boys’ love expert, he hasn’t quite realized…he’s in one himself. Which means it’s up to Sasaki to make sure their story has a happily ever after…!

The manga is ongoing. (The spinoff manga is also ongoing!)
