Scooby-Doo and the Meddling Kids Face the Apocalypse in New Series

Scooby-Doo Scooby Apocalypse

DC Comics’ new take on the iconic meddling kids, Fred, Daphne, Velma, Shaggy, and Scooby-Doo, raises the stakes higher than ever before as their world experiences the apocalypse!

Scooby Apocalypse #1 has been released and it is surprisingly good.

I have to be honest that I had my doubts when DC Comics announced the new Scooby-Doo series. Who in their right mind would read a series where Fred and Daphne are holding guns, Velma is operating some sort of a drone, Shaggy looks weird, and Scooby-Doo has emojis coming out of his goggles as they try to survive the apocalypse?

However, Scooby Apocalypse takes into account everything bizarre with the premise and amps it up. The meddling kids are somewhere in their 20s now and they haven’t formed a team yet. Daphne and Fred are working hard on raising the ratings for their conspiracy-focused TV show, Velma is working as a researcher in a facility that ends up creating nanotech that brings about the end of the world, and Shaggy knows Scooby from experiments the same facility did on dogs in order to weaponize them. It is weird but somehow all of it totally works.

The Scooby-Doo franchise has focused on the main characters solving mysteries that had humans behind them. With Scooby Apocalypse the gang is now facing real monsters as the whole world plunges into chaos.

Keith Giffen, Jim Lee, J.M. DeMatteis, and Howard Porter have made sure to give the main players more or less the same personalities fans are familiar with. Velma is still the science nerd, Shaggy is still carefree, Scooby is Scooby, and Fred still looks like a jock though he’s crushing big time on Daphne. The only character who seems to have gone through the biggest change is Daphne. She still has an ego but is in no way a damsel in distress. From the looks of things she might end up becoming the leader of the gang.

Scooby Apocalypse does a good job in giving birth to a new version of iconic characters. Only time will tell how the series will fare with readers as it progresses.
