For some, October is all about cozy sweaters, pumpkin spice, and getting ready for Thanksgiving. For others, it’s about murder! Or creepy ghosts and spooky goblins! Vampires, witches, and scare-jumps reign supreme during Halloween month, and Screamfest is ready to deliver.

Here at The Geekiary, horror is definitely a pleasure! Personally, I can take or leave it, but when I do indulge, I like to be scarred for life. Formed in August 2001, Screamfest has frightened and delighted viewers for nearly two decades. It showcases films in the horror and sci-fi genres, giving filmmakers an opportunity to show their work to a wide market. With many of the films earning distribution during or after the festival. This year’s fest marks a number of entries that are already set to be released on streaming platforms, including Mr. Mercedes which will air on Peacock.

Screamfest has boasted huge hits such as Paranormal Activity, and has started the careers of talent like Toby Wilkins (Mousetrap). Their participants have gone on to work with big names like Sam Raimi and Jason Blum. Screamfest curates a perfect collection of movies that’ll haunt your nightmares… in a fun way!

This year, Screamfest 2020 will run from October 6, 2020, to October 15, 2020. I had the pleasure of attending the opening night drive-in where we watched the premiere of Hulu’s Books of Blood.

The drive-in was the perfect environment for someone like me who has to talk through the entirety of a scary movie just so I can function afterward. My friend and I cracked wise (with doors locked, of course) about Britt Robertson’s choices and Anna Friel’s entrepreneurial skills as loudly as we wanted without interrupting the crowd.

Screenfest is all drive-in style this year, but there’s lots of content that can be found on their YouTube page. Trailers for the films and past selections can be enjoyed and they’re constantly adding new content. I’ve included their “Ultimate #StayHome Watch #WithMe” playlist that features short entries from previous years. Stay tuned to The Geekiary for a review of festival darling Initiation by John Berardo and a review of the queer vampire film, Thirst.
