It’s been ages since it was announced that Netflix would be adapting Leigh Bardugo’s popular Grishaverse books, a young adult series set in an alternate version of Russia where Grisha have the power to manipulate matter. After 84 years of waiting, we finally have a Shadow and Bone teaser trailer and a ballpark release date.

The Shadow and Bone teaser focuses on Morozova’s Stag, an ancient, magical white stag that appears only at twilight and is a creature of myth in the Grisha world. The hunt for the Stag is an important part of the original trilogy, as its antlers are sought after to form an amplifier for Alina Starkov’s unique Grisha abilities.

The stag in the teaser fades into a shadowed woman holding a light, which is obviously meant to be Alina – the Sun Summoner, and the main character of the first trilogy of books. The image of Alina cradling the light is featured on the official Shadow and Bone Netflix page.

And at last we’re given a release date of April 2021, so in just a few short months, the wait will be over!

Check out the teaser:

Here’s is Netflix’s description of Shadow and Bone:

Shadow and Bone finds us in a war-torn world where lowly soldier and orphan Alina Starkov has just unleashed an extraordinary power that could be the key to setting her country free. With the monstrous threat of the Shadow Fold looming, Alina is torn from everything she knows to train as part of an elite army of magical soldiers known as Grisha. But as she struggles to hone her power, she finds that allies and enemies can be one and the same and that nothing in this lavish world is what it seems. There are dangerous forces at play, including a crew of charismatic criminals, and it will take more than magic to survive.

The description only mentions Alina’s story, but we do know that characters from the Six of Crows duology – books set in the same universe and featuring characters from the original trilogy – will appear in the series as well. Though the duology is set after the trilogy, chronologically, those characters are still out there and doing things, and we’ll likely get to see those things.

News about this series has been trickling in ever since the first announcement. Casting news came first… and that was about it for quite a while. Many fans had high hopes for the Shadow and Bone panel at the virtual NYCC Metaverse in October, but unfortunately it revealed precious little. We were given the first listen at the show’s theme music, which was pretty neat.

So I’m extremely excited for the teaser, even if there isn’t any footage. I’m a proponent that the less there is to a trailer, the better, as trailers often have the habit of giving too much away. I will be impatiently waiting for April until I can see all of these characters on screen myself.

The cast includes Jessie Mei Li (Alina Starkov), Archie Renaux (Malyen Oretsev), Freddy Carter (Kaz Brekker), Amita Suman (Inej), Kit Young (Jesper Fahey), and Ben Barnes (General Kirigan).
