“Shadowhunters” Gets Renewed for a Second Season by Freeform!
Fans of Shadowhunters should rejoice as the fantasy TV show has been renewed for a second season.
During a live Q&A session on Facebook, the Shadowhunters team announced to their fans that a sophomore season has been confirmed. While the film adaptation of The Mortal Instruments by Cassandra Clare didn’t do well at the box-office, it is good to see that the TV adaptation has proven to be successful. As far as I’m concerned, TV is a better option when it comes to adapting a book series compared to getting it on the big screen.
Shadowhunters follows teenager Clary Fray (Katherine McNamara), who learns that she is a human and angel hybrid, known as a Shadowhunter, and she has to protect the human race from demons. Soon she is introduced to a world that has other paranormal beings, and also discovers all the powers she didn’t know she had.
According to Variety, the show is averaging 2.2 million viewers in the Nielsen’s live-plus-7-ratings. The current numbers don’t come across as exceptional but Freeform, previously ABC Family, has said the TV series is scoring in the 12-34 demographic it is targeting. The network has also gone on to say that the show is popular on social media and that fan engagement played a role in its renewal.
While I haven’t started watching Shadowhunters yet, my social media feeds do show a lot of content regarding the show. There’s also a queer couple consisting of the characters Magnus Bane and Alec Lightwood, lovingly called Malec by fans, that has a lot of fan support. So, at least the show is treating queer representation with respect. And in the time of social media, I do believe that respectable queer representation can work wonders for a show’s popularity. Episode twelve of the first season is even titled ‘Malec’!

'Motherland: Fort Salem' Has Been Renewed for a Second Season
After a rocky start I’m hearing good things about this show so I’m definitely given it a chance, plus I was already familiar with Cassandra Clare books (& the odd film always taken from them..).so we’ll see.
Last not least as you said TPTB have already aknowledged the gay relationship between “Malec” in canon (frankly not a thing I’d have taken for granted), so I guess I couldn’t really ask for more (..for the moment at least LOL!).
Plus now that they’ve secured a second season I’m pretty positive that the showrunner will have the chance to deepen the story & truly developing better the material, fingers crossed!
