She-Hulk: Attorney at Law 1×06 Review: “Just Jen”

Jennifer is stuck being a bridesmaid for a week at an old friend’s wedding, but something sinister seems to be afoot in “Just Jen.”

With her rights to the She-Hulk name fully restored in “Mean, Green, and Straight Poured into These Jeans,” Jennifer’s (Tatiana Maslany) next challenge is to be a bridesmaid in an old friend’s wedding. “Just Jen” is an overall static episode but has some interesting moments and teases of the series’ ultimate villain.

The episode opens as Jennifer receives an invitation to be a bridesmaid in high school friend Lulu’s (Patti Harrison) wedding. She accepts despite having lost touch with her over the years. The show, fully aware that a “self-contained” wedding episode about a character we don’t really care about isn’t really that exciting in a superhero series, has Jennifer comment to the audience about the inconvenience of weddings in general. The show’s self-awareness helps salvage the concept of the episode.

Jennifer arrives at the wedding as She-Hulk, but Lulu asks her to solely be Jennifer for the rest of the wedding. Jennifer promises to be just Jen and the title card changes to Just Jen: Attorney at Law. The running gag of the changing title cards remains one of the more successful jokes of the series. As Jennifer joins the wedding party, she is treated horribly by Lulu and the other bridesmaids. Though Jennifer would be justified to leave them behind, she sticks around and tries to make the best of the situation.

The wedding week becomes worse as Titania (Jameela Jamil) arrives. Though Titania claims that she’s simply there as a date of a friend, it soon becomes clear that she’s eager to get back at Jennifer. Titania starts a fight with her, and Jennifer reluctantly transforms into She-Hulk to fight back. The two get into a scuffle on the dance floor, and Jennifer ultimately wins. The fight, as well as the reaction of the DJ, Jennifer’s cousin Ched (Nicholas Cirillo), make the sequence a highlight of the episode.

In addition, Jennifer meets Josh (Trevor Salter), and they connect immediately. For all the dating struggles we’ve seen Jennifer go through, it’s nice to see a guy that seems to appreciate both Jennifer and She-Hulk. However, I’m worried that he seems too good to be true, particularly with the episode ending reveal that the main villain is watching them talking at the wedding.

Back at the law firm, Nikki (Ginger Gonzaga) and Mallory (Renee Elise Goldsberry) work together on a new case. Mr. Immortal (David Pasquesi) is a sleazy man who is incapable of dying. Rather than divorcing his eight previous wives, he has “killed himself” multiple times to avoid conflict. The case is interesting, and Nikki really shines as she negotiates a settlement that works for all eight former wives.

As Nikki and Mallory finish up the case, they come across a website filled with vile posts hating on She-Hulk and wanting her to die. Ignoring Mallory’s suggestion to not tell Jennifer, Nikki leaves Jennifer a voice message about it. In a lab, a mysterious person confirms the next phase of their She-Hulk plan and prepares a syringe to attempt to extract her blood. Though Jennifer was able to fight off her attackers on the last attempt, she likely won’t be as lucky this time around. Though we still don’t know the identity of this villain, the tease is enough to show that he will be formidable once he finally appears.

“Just Jen” has a couple of Easter eggs, but once again doesn’t have a post-credit scene. Though the episode has some fun moments, it ultimately wasn’t as funny as the season’s earlier episodes. Hopefully, Jennifer’s return to work and the final battle against this mysterious villain will solidify the series as a worthy addition to the Marvel Cinematic Universe’s Disney+ series collection.
