“Spider-Man: Brand New Day” Continues Box Office Domination as “Coyote vs Acme” Debuts

Spider-Man: Brand New Day sits atop the weekend box office as a bunch of new movies premiered in theaters. And while Coyote vs Acme didn’t hit it big, at least the excited fans got to finally see it!

There isn’t much I have left to say about Spider-Man: Brand New Day. I think everyone was expecting it to make lots of money. However, the latest Spider-Man flick crawling up the All-Time Highest Grossing Movies chart has been quite a welcome surprise for fans, especially after the not-so-great track record of recent MCU fare.

Starring Tom Holland as the titular character, Spider-Man: Brand New Day grossed an estimated $22.2 million during the current weekend, pushing the worldwide haul to a whopping $2.3 billion. This means that SM: BND is at number 4 on the highest-grossing films list, right behind Avatar: The Way of Water (2022), which grossed $2.3 billion. With how things are going for it, SM: BND is expected to cross Avatar: The Way of Water and claim a spot at number 3 behind 2019’s Avengers: Endgame (at $2.7 billion) and 2009’s Avatar (at $2.9 billion).

That’s an extremely impressive performance from Sony’s side of the shared MCU film series. Of course, fans are anticipating the upcoming Avengers: Doomsday to do amazingly well come December 18, 2026. But then again, you never know what might happen to live-action superhero comic book movies, considering the times we are in. Avengers: Doomsday breaking box office records is possible, but not guaranteed.

Talking about a new release, Coyote vs Acme debuted at the second spot on this week’s box office list with an estimated $15.4 million. Now, to be fair, against a reported production budget of $70 million, it’s highly unlikely for Coyote vs Acme to turn a profit during it’s theatrical run, even if Rotten Tomatoes has the Critic Score at 96% and the Audience Score at 94%.

However, having said that, fans of the long-running Looney Tunes IP are just glad the movie experienced a theatrical release after the entire tax write-off controversy involving Warner Bros Discovery from back in November of 2023. Ketchup Entertainment did what they could when it came to marketing such a movie, after acquiring the rights for $50 million in March 2025.

As for my opinions, I did enjoy watching it. Coyote vs Acme served up an enjoyable legal comedy as the narrative followed Wile E. Coyote teaming up with personal injury lawyer Kevin Avery (Will Forte) to sue the Acme Corporation for deliberately supplying Wile E. Coyote with faulty products. I liked how the story wasn’t concerned with explaining how and why the Looney Tunes characters were living in the human world. The cast, including Lana Condor and John Cena, knew what kind of flick they were in, and everybody did a great job.

Not having the Looney Tunes, specifically Bugs Bunny and Daffy Duck, be celebrities was a fresh creative take for telling such a law-centric comedy.

My only gripe would be how the eyes of the human characters didn’t always line up well when interacting with the cartoon characters. Also, I feel that Tweety needed a bit more character development considering his actions, even if he was being forced to do them.

The Odyssey took the third spot with an approximate $14.3 million. The critically acclaimed movie has collected more than $1.5 billion worldwide. Yet another feather in director Christopher Nolan’s impressive hat.

Starring Jacob Elordi, Josh Brolin, and Margaret Qualley, the latest post-apocalyptic fare The Dog Stars failed to make an impact at the box office, debuting at number 5 with a mere $8 million. Directed by Ridley Scott from a screenplay by Mark L. Smith, the story is based on The Dog Stars by Peter Heller.

Having watched the trailer, I had no interest in checking out such a movie on the big screen. The visuals felt derivative of the numerous post-apocalyptic offerings out there. Also, Elordi and Qualley kind of gave The Dog Stars a “streaming movie” vibe, in my opinion.

With a reported production budget close to $100 million (what the heck!), The Dog Stars currently stands at only $19 million globally. Not a great look for the iconic Ridley Scott, with the movie hit with a 40% Critic Score. At least, the Audience Score is at 71% on Rotten Tomatoes.

I do hope Elordi finds a good role ASAP. I kind of like him as an actor. Also, to me, Elordi should focus more on smaller award-friendly fare (he has the acting chops!) instead of trying to be a traditional blockbuster leading man.

Supernatural horror movie Buddy debuted at 6th place with an estimated $5.3 million. It’s been directed by Casper Kelly, who co-wrote the screenplay with Jamie King. The Rotten Tomatoes Score stands at 88% from Critics and 78% from Audiences.

I might catch Buddy down the line when it hits Digital or streaming. I just haven’t found myself to be in the mood to watch a movie about a “child-friendly” mascot being a serial killer.

The End of Oak Street was at the 7th spot with around $4.9 million. The total global gross seems to be approximately $105 million against a reported production budget in the $80-92 million window. Not really a good performer, but hey, I hope this dinosaur-featuring sci-fi flick finds an audience upon home release.

I really enjoyed watching The End of Oak Street. It has a bunch of dinosaur-related violence. The conclusion is quite dark. And I was surprised by the unexpected queer representation via the character of the young daughter played by Maisy Stella.

It’s kind of interesting that the animated PAW Patrol: The Dino Movie managed to make more money than The End of Oak Street. Sitting at number 8, the movie collected an estimated $4.8 million, pushing the worldwide gross to more than $124 million against a reported production budget of $40 million. That’s a clear success. So, expect more PAW Patrol animated movies!

As for my opinions about PAW Patrol: The Dino Movie. I had fun watching it. The disability representation via Rex was handled well, along with themes about preserving nature and believing in your abilities to help those in need.
