Spider-Man Films Coming to Disney+ in 2022

The Spider-Man films, which have thus far been absent from Disney+, will finally join the other MCU films on the streaming platform.

When I decided to do my MCU rewatch a few months ago, I didn’t bother checking to see if the Spider-Man films were there for some strange reason. I just assumed they would be, though in retrospect that was a pretty silly assumption. Imagine my surprise after Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 2 when it jumped immediately to Thor: Ragnarok! Come 2022, however, our binges will be much closer to complete thanks to a deal struck between Disney and Sony.

Per Variety:

The wide-ranging deal, which runs through Sony’s 2026 theatrical slate, also calls for Sony titles to run across Disney’s array of streaming and linear platforms, making it unprecedented in scope as it covers Disney Plus, Hulu, FX Networks, ABC, Disney Channels and Freeform. It also includes a significant number of library titles that will be spread among various outlets. Hulu will gain access to what Disney described as “a significant number” of library titles starting in June.

“This landmark multi-year, platform-agnostic agreement guarantees the team at Disney Media and Entertainment Distribution a tremendous amount of flexibility and breadth of programming possibilities to leverage Sony’s rich slate of award-winning action and family films across our direct-to-consumer services and linear channels,” said Chuck Saftler, head of business operations for ABC, Freeform, FX Networks and Acquisitions for Disney’s Media and Entertainment Distribution. “This is a win for fans, who will benefit from the ability to access the very best content from two of Hollywood’s most prolific studios across a multitude of viewing platforms and experiences.”

This is pretty huge! And it will obviously impact way more than just the Spider-Man films, but let’s be real, that’s clearly a major selling point for this whole thing. I’d expect a more detailed outline of what films will go where and when at a later date. We’re only four months into 2021, after all, so we’ve got plenty of time to get hyped.  

This lovely bit of news should also be interesting following all the multi-verse discussion going on lately, especially since Alfred Molina has been dropping spoilers about it and sending everyone into a tizzy. Just how integrated will the previous Spider-Man films be in the MCU? Don’t know. But this sure is great timing. It’s all coming together.

There is, of course, some nervousness about the Almighty Mouse controlling so much of Sony and reducing the number of companies competing against each other in the entertainment and media industry. Absolutely valid concerns. And I’m not at all going to refute that. This sure is convenient, though. And I realize that by saying that I’m being a Good Little Consumer and not thinking about implications further down the line and… that’s a fair criticism. But hey, when 2022 rolls around I’ll have 50+ hours of MCU content all on one platform, and that’s pretty neat.
