SPY x FAMILY Season 2, New Haikyuu Stage Play, and MORE! – Jump Festa 2023 News Briefs

Spy x Family Movie

Shueisha’s annual Jump Festa event, a weekend devoted to anime and manga related to the publisher’s many Jump properties (such as Weekly Shonen Jump, Jump Square, etc.), was held this past weekend in Tokyo. Some big news – such as the hugely popular SPY x FAMILY getting a much-deserved season 2 – came out of the event, and I’ve got some of the highlights right here.

We’ll start off with my favorite news from, the weekend. Not only is SPY x FAMILY getting a second season, there will also be a film! Both are set to release in 2023, and the above special image was also revealed. SPY x FAMILY is my favorite new anime of the year, so I am really excited (and not at all surprised!) by this news.

With a lot of the anime I watch, the films aren’t really that exciting. Franchises like Haikyuu!! and even Attack on Titan tend to use films as recaps, condensed versions of episodes that have already aired. Sometimes there will be new scenes, but usually I’d rather just rewatch the anime.

SPY x FAMILY, however, is a slice-of-life series that works really well at putting out a film. It looks as though the film will be an original story by manga creator Tatsuya Endo, as in not an adaptation of any of the existing chapters. This is often difficult for series to do, because it would need to fit into canon and not contradict anything. But a series like SPY x FAMILY, which isn’t told in any sort of order, is perfect.

Another series returning for season 2 in 2023 is Jujutsu Kaisen. The previously-announced season now has a general air date and will debut in July of next year.

And Blue Exorcist fans will have something to celebrate, as it was revealed that the series will get a third anime series! The original Blue Exorcist aired in 2011, and its sequel, Blue Exorcist: Kyoto Saga, aired in 2017.

As previously reported by Farid in his review for the latest manga chapter, Sasuke Retsuden will get an anime adaptation during Boruto: Naruto Next Generations.

If you’re a fan of stage plays, then you can cheer about the fact that My Hero AcademiaNaruto, and Haikyuu!! all have new stage plays coming in 2023. My Hero Academia will premiere in April, and Haikyuu!! in August. No date was given for Naruto

One last piece of news from the event: Kuroko’s Basketball The Movie LAST GAME, which originally screened in Japanese theaters in 2017, has been converted to 4D and will get a theatrical re-release to celebrate. The film will screen in 79 theaters across Japan in January 2023. They will also screen a full music video for “Zero Step”, the franchise’s 10th anniversary song, which was performed by GRANRODEO and Kensho Ono (Kuroko).

Those are some of the highlights from Jump Festa 2023! What are you excited about?
