The Star Trek franchise isn’t going anywhere soon as far as TPTB are concerned. Star Trek: Discovery, Star Trek: Lower Decks, and Star Trek: Strange New Worlds have been renewed for the Paramount Plus streaming service.

The current renewals mean that the queer-inclusive and enjoyable Star Trek: Discovery will be coming back for a fifth season. While many had issues with how the queer representation in Star Trek: Discovery was initially handled, I think the writers were able to pivot in the right direction even though the process of trying to mend their past narrative choices (involving Culber and Stamets) wasn’t perfect. The show has gone on to include more queer characters.

Having premiered on November 18, 2021, the fourth season of Star Trek: Discovery will come back with episode 8 on February 10, 2022.

As for the animated series Star Trek: Lower Decks, it has been renewed for a fourth outing even though the third season is yet to premiere sometime in summer of 2022. Frankly, I haven’t been very interested in watching ST: Lower Decks. But if you’re a fan, congrats on the renewal news!

For those wondering, The Geekiary’s writer Burkley Hermann authored an insightful piece on the queer representation featured in ST: Lower Decks. Go and give it a read!

ST: Strange New Worlds also got a second season renewal even though the first season is yet to debut on May 5, 2022. Set before the events that transpired in the original Star Trek series, the show’s cast includes Anson Mount as Captain Pike, Ethan Peck as Spock, and Rebecca Romijn as Una Chin-Riley.

Four years ago, we made a promise to grow ‘Star Trek’ into something it had never been before, and thanks to the incredibly hard work done by our many talented showrunners, writers, and directors, along with the extraordinary support of CBS Studios and Paramount Plus, we’re keeping our word,” shared Alex Kurtzman, who oversees the Star Trek TV franchise for CBS Studios. “Now our current shows are set up for the future as we work to build ‘Trek’s’ next phase of programming for years to come.”

Coming to the other shows, Star Trek: Picard season 2 will debut on March 3, 2022. A third season is currently in production.

The more kid-centric animated series Star Trek: Prodigy debuted on October 28, 2021. The first season will reportedly have 20 episodes. From what I understand, the series will go on a break once episode 10 airs on February 3, 2022. The remaining 10 episodes will debut sometime later this year.

With how things are moving for the ST franchise over at Paramount Plus, I think ST: Prodigy will get a renewal as well soon enough. You can read Jamie’s reviews for Star Trek: Prodigy here. The show has a good amount of stuff for longtime Star Trek fans to enjoy. I haven’t begun watching it yet, though. I’m still contemplating if I should binge-watch once the first half is done by next month or start watching the entire season once all 20 episodes have aired. Hmmm. Let’s see what I decide.
