Star Trek at SDCC: “Discovery,” “Picard,” “Short Treks” & “Lower Decks”

Star Trek at SDCC offered the latest news on the third season of Star Trek: Discovery. We also got to know about Star Trek: Short Treks and Star Trek: Lower Decks. Of course, everyone was talking about Star Trek: Picard, too!

CBS All Acess wasn’t joking when it thought of coming to SDCC with Star Trek Universe. We got a lot of interesting content about what to expect as far as Star Trek is concerned on CBS All Access.

We got a new trailer for Star Trek: Picard. It was revealed Next Generation character Data (Brent Spiner), Star Trek: Voyager’s Seven of Nine (Jeri Ryan), and the Borg will all play roles in the new series.

The focus of the trailer was on Data’s sacrifice to save Picard’s life in Star Trek: Nemesis. The series is expected to debut late 2019.

Coming to Star Trek: Discovery, Sonequa Martin-Green revealed that the third season just began principal photography in Iceland earlier this month. Actor David Ajala has joined the cast as Cleveland Booker or Book.

Ethan Peck (Spock), Rebecca Romijn (Number One), and Anson Mount (Captain Christopher Pike) will be returning to the franchise with three U.S.S. Enterprise-focused Star Trek: Short Treks.

The titles for the six upcoming new shorts are “Ask Not,” “Q&A,” “The Trouble with Edward,” “The Girl Who Made the Stars,” “Ephaim and Dot,” and “Children of Mars.”

The official description reads:

STAR TREK: DISCOVERY follows the voyages of Starfleet on their missions to discover new worlds and new life forms, and one Starfleet officer who must learn that to truly understand all things alien, you must first understand yourself. Seasons one and two are now available to stream on CBS All Access for subscribers in the U.S., and is distributed concurrently by CBS Studios International on Netflix in 188 countries and in Canada on Bell Media’s Space channel and OTT service Crave.

In the animation department, fans were given the first look at the comedy series Star Trek: Lower Decks which will follow the support crew on one of Starfleet’s least important ships in 2380. The 10-episode long first season will debut in 2020.

The Starfleet crew residing in the “lower decks” of the U.S.S. Cerritos, include Ensign Beckett Mariner (voiced by Tawny Newsome), Ensign Brad Boimler (Jack Quaid), Ensign Tendi (Noël Wells), and Ensign Rutherford (Eugene Cordero).

The Starfleet characters that comprise the ship’s bridge crew include Captain Carol Freeman (Dawnn Lewis), Commander Jack Ransom (Jerry O’Connell), Lieutenant Shaxs (Fred Tatasciore), and Doctor T’Ana (Gillian Vigman).

STAR TREK: LOWER DECKS will focus on the support crew serving on one of Starfleet’s least important ships. The series will be produced by CBS’ Eye Animation Productions, CBS Television Studios’ new animation arm; Secret Hideout; and Roddenberry Entertainment. Secret Hideout’s Alex Kurtzman and Heather Kadin and Roddenberry Entertainment’s Rod Roddenberry and Trevor Roth and Katie Krentz will serve as executive producers alongside creator Mike McMahan (“Rick and Morty”). Aaron Baiers (Secret Hideout), who brought McMahan to the project, will serve as a co-executive producer. The series will air exclusively on CBS All Access in the United States and will be distributed concurrently internationally by CBS Studios International.
