New Star Wars Clip: THEY FLY NOW?!

Star Wars The Rise of Skywalker THEY FLY NOW

A new Star Wars: The Rise of Skywalker clip has been released online. And now everyone is shouting “THEY FLY NOW?!” Yes. Yes, they do.

The new Star Wars: The Rise of Skywalker clip shows a longer version of a segment featured in the main trailer, where Rey, Finn, Poe, Chewie, and the droids are racing away from Stormtroopers. Some of the Stormtroopers seem to get launched off the back of their vehicles and then use some sort of jet pack device to fly towards them. This leads C3P-O, Finn, and Poe shouting at each ‘THEY FLY NOW?!’

What I love most about the “They Fly Now” scene is that it highlights the dynamic between the three main characters that have drawn me to the new trilogy more than anything else about the films. These three are truly something special, and it’s delightful to see them playing off each other in this short 30-second clip.

One of my main beefs with The Last Jedi was that these amazing characters spent most of the film apart, so this chemistry was lacking in that film. Thankfully, they seem to be a united squad again in this film. The characters and the world-building are the true strengths of Star Wars, so I’m incredibly grateful that so many of my favs are back together after spending one long film spread across the galaxy from one another.

The clip is especially funny coming on the heels of the latest episode of The Mandalorian, where jet-pack-wearing Mandalorians lead to one of the funniest lines of the episode. It’s Jet Pack Week in the Star Wars universe apparently.

Of course, people have been quick to “well actually” this clip. Jumptroopers have jet packs. The joke still works for the viewers and the characters, though. The Jumptroopers are primarily present in video games and other spin-off materials, and not the core films or shows. A large percentage of the viewing audience will be surprised by the fact that they can fly.

Likewise, the characters wouldn’t necessarily know this either. Finn was primarily a janitor until he got pulled into battle right before The Force Awakens. Rey and Chewie have no reason to have encyclopedic knowledge of Empire troops. Poe may or may not have encountered them at some point, but there’s a chance they never showed up in any of his missions or briefings. The only characters that would have a good reason to know that they could do this are the droids. And. frankly, I don’t know how their programming works when it comes to teaching them the various weapons and tools in the Empire’s arsenal.

But regardless of the Well Actually-ing going on, I’m thrilled with this clip and counting down the days until the film gets released. We have just 25 more days to go. I managed to grab the last non-front row seat available opening night in my city and I’m digging out my Poe Dameron jacket to wear to the premiere.
