‘Captain America: Civil War’ – The Steve, Bucky, and Tony Love-Triangle Gets Fifth Highest Opening Ever!

Captain America Civil War

Disney’s Captain America: Civil War is all set to have the fifth-biggest opening ever, considering all the millions it’ll be making over the weekend. As if anyone really thought the latest installment in the MCU was going to be a flop!

Variety reports that Captain America: Civil War is making U.S. box office history by accumulating $180 million in just the opening weekend. This current number makes it the fifth-highest opening ever. It garnered $75.3 million from 4,226 locations on Friday. Keep in mind that the total also includes the $25 million the film made from Thursday night previews.

Having the fifth highest opening means that Captain America: Civil War will come behind four other extremely popular films. Star Wars: The Force Awakens holds its place for the biggest opening weekend with $248 million, which very impressive considering it has a female lead. People will watch a female-led film if it’s good, Hollywood!

In second place is Jurassic World with a weekend total of $208.8 million. One can argue that it too revolved around female leads, one human and the other a genetically engineered dinosaur, with a whole bunch of supporting female characters. The third and fourth places are taken by The Avengers ($207 million) and Avengers: Age of Ultron ($191.3 million) respectively. Except for Jurassic World all of the top five films are owned by Disney. That’s a lot of money for a single company to be making, I tell you.

Captain America: Civil War is the 13th film in the MCU – with more to come – and the box office numbers are a clear indication that the world wants superhero movies to keep getting released. Other studios such as Fox and Warner Brothers are also trying to tap into the superhero gold mine, but they haven’t had as much luck as Disney.

Warner Bros’ Batman v. Superman has only accumulated $864 million so far and X-Men: Days of Future Past is Fox’s highest superhero film with a worldwide gross of $747 million. With the studio’s plans to reboot the Fantastic Four into a profitable franchise being spoiled, they only have the X-Men to work with. Let’s see how the upcoming X-Men: Apocalypse does when it hits U.S theaters on the 27th of May, 2016.
