Steven Universe Soundtrack: Volume 1 was launched on June 2nd across all major digital platforms. Less than two weeks later, it has proven to be an out-of-this world hit.

Fans clamored for the chance to listen to lovingly remastered songs from the Emmy-nominated television series, catapulting the Steven Universe Soundtrack up the billboard charts worldwide.

From the latest charts ending on June 8th:

  • #1 on Independent Albums
  • #2 on Soundtrack Album Sales
  • #3 on Overall Digital Albums
  • #8 on Top Current Albums
  • #10 Top Album Sales
  • #22 on Billboard Top 200

Steven Universe is a character-driven show about a group of alien rebels who have vowed to protect the planet Earth and the humans who live there from their destructive Homeworld, as their youngest member Steven struggles to come to terms with his powers and his deceased mother’s past. It uses character songs to highlight emotions and support the plot, with pieces written by the show’s creator Rebecca Sugar, as well as the composing duo Aivi and Surasshu and storyboarder Jeff Liu. The soundtrack features 37 remastered songs from the show’s first four seasons, with performances by the show’s voice cast, including Zach Callison (Steven), Estelle (Garnet), Deedee Magno Hall (Pearl), Michaela Dietz (Amethyst) and Tom Scharpling (Greg). It also includes the full ending credits theme, ‘Love Like You’, written and sung by Sugar. The Geekiary has a full review of the album here.

The success of the Steven Universe Soundtrack is a testimony to the dedication of the fanbase, as well as the amazing quality that Steven Universe has become renowned for. This is not the only recognition that the show and its tie-in products have received. Steven Universe was iTunes 2016 “Most Original Kids Show”. The episode “The Answer”, a fairytale romance telling the story of how Ruby and Sapphire met, fell in love, and decided to rebel against the restrictive society which persecuted them for their relationship was nominated for an Emmy Award for Outstanding Short Form Animated Program.  The storybook adaptation of the same episode, written Sugar herself, made it onto The New York Time’s bestseller list. The show’s dedication to including LBGTQ themes– depictions of same gender romances and nonbinary characters– earned it the GLAAD Media Award for outstanding comedy series.

Hopefully this success will guarantee the show many seasons to come… and perhaps even some more soundtrack volumes? We’ll have to wait for the show to produce enough to vocal pieces to fill another full 37, but I for one would love the chance to listen to the show’s stunning instrumentals.
