Comic Book Reviews (Week 10/23/2019): Marauders Issue 1, Strikeforce Issue 2, and More!

Strikeforce Issue 2 review
Strikeforce Issue 2 (Marvel Comics)

Hey all! Welcome to my comic book review roundup for this week (10/23/2019). I’ll be going over all of the titles I’ve read. My review list includes Marauders Issue 1, Strikeforce Issue 2, You Are Obsolete Issue 2, and more. So let’s begin!

I’m going to talk about Strikeforce Issue 2 first because it was so good it had me close to tearing up because of all the excitement. I have no idea how writer Tini Howard was able to create such an engrossing story. Howard created a team of random characters and was able to make everyone work impressively well together. Who would have thought we would see a comic book starring Blade, Wiccan, Winter Soldier, Spectrum, Angela, and Spider-Woman? Well, Howard thought about it and then hit it out of the park.

The second issue’s better than the first. We got to see Blade and his crew trying to make sense of what the Vridai want. Everyone broke off in teams of two and Howard allowed all of them to have a moment in the story. The issue’s also not afraid to show that two members of the team are queer. With Wiccan getting kidnapped at the end, I can’t wait to see what happens next.

Recommendation: PICK IT UP! The art by German Peralta and muted colors by Miroslav Mrva work impressively well with Howard’s script.

Fearless Issue 4 review
Fearless Issue 4 (Marvel Comics)

Fearless Issue 4

If you’re looking for a comic book series that features the awesome fictional women from the Marvel Comic Universe as well as showcases women writers and artists, then Fearless is for you. I have to be honest, I didn’t find it interesting when it debuted. But now, four issues in, I want more!

The main story, titled ‘Campfire Song,’  by writer Seanan McGuire continued the adventure Invisible Woman, Storm, and Captain Marvel found themselves in when they’re invited to speak at a camp meant for empowering young girls. These three women do make an OP team, and I wouldn’t mind joining them on another mission down the line. Who would be insane enough to mess with Sue, Ororo, and Carol together?

Recommendation: Give it a try.

Marauders Issue 1 review
Marauders Issue 1 (Marvel Comics)

Marauders Issue 1

The newest title in the Dawn of X series has already sold out and deservedly so. Now, I did take issue with how writer Gerry Duggan handled Goddess Storm in the debut. The comic book also faced some backlash because of how artist Matteo Lolli and colorist Federico Blee (more or less) whitewashed Storm.

Having said that, Marauders Issue 1 is a great comic book to read. The premise dealt with certain governments stopping mutants from entering Krakoa. To help, Emma Frost enlisted Kitty Pryde to captain a ship to help save the mutants in trouble around the globe. Being Frost, you know she has hidden motives. So, it’ll be interesting to see them come to light.

Duggan struck a nice balance between humor and action in the debut. The action sequence involving Kitty and some soldiers was amazing to witness. The art team also managed to add humor in each panel.

Also, for some reason, Kitty is unable to enter Krakoa. My guess is that her phasing ability allows her to access certain parts Moira doesn’t want her snooping around in. Writer Jonathan Hickman told us Moira didn’t want any mutants who can see the future enter Krakoa. So, it makes sense she wouldn’t want someone like Kitty there either because Professor X, Magneto, and Moira are definitely hiding stuff. This new series has a lot of untapped potential. I can’t wait to see what happens next!

Recommendation: You need to read Marauders Issue 1. Also, I think we got to know about Iceman’s sexual preference. My opinion is that Bobby’s versatile, but leans toward being a bottom.

The Amazing Mary Jane issue 1 review
The Amazing Mary Jane Issue 1 (Marvel Comics)

The Amazing Mary Jane Issue 1

I don’t know why I decided to read this issue, but I’m kind of glad I did. The writer is Leah Williams and the art team is Carlos Gomez and Carols Lopez. From what I could gather, Mysterio’s filming a movie about his life and he cast Mary Jane as the lead actress. The entire thing doesn’t really make a lot of sense to me, but it sure is fun.

Recommendation: It’s nice to see Mary Jane getting the spotlight in such a manner. I say you should give it a try. You might like it, too.

You Are Obsolete Issue 2

Aftershock continues to publish some interesting titles. I greatly enjoy reading Animosity, and I can see myself being very invested in You Are Obsolete. The second issue’s written by Mathew Klickstein. Evgeniy Bornyakov is the artist with Lauren Affee being the colorist. The story’s set on a creepy island where kids have taken over. They seem to be ruling the territory through smartphones and other technology. Adults are killed when they turn 40 years of age. Our lead is Lyla Wilton, a reporter who’s been invited to the island for some reason.

From the very first page, you can tell this story is going have numerous twists and turns. The second issue introduced us to Martina. I think she’s the leader, but who knows? Anyway, I want more!

Recommendation: If you like mysteries with creepy kids, pick it up!

Money Shot Issue 1 review
Money Shot Issue 1 (Vault Comics)

Money Shot Issue 1

I have no idea what’s actually happening in Money Shot or what the endgame is supposed to be, but I’m here for the ride. It’s written by Tim Seeley and Sarah Beattie. The art is by Rebekah Isaacs with the colorist being Kurt Michael Russell. From what I could understand, the leads are a group of young scientists who decide to create an adult entertainment streaming service where they hook up with aliens to gather funding for their science projects.

Recommendation: It’s so weird, it’s good!

Detective Comics Issue 1014 review

Detective Comics Issue 1014

Have you ever wondered what would happen if Dr. Freeze was ever able to resurrect his wife? Well, writer Peter J. Tomai gave us an answer. Apparently, Nora Fries is a ride or die kind of wife. I can see it being of interest to certain fans, but I couldn’t get into it. The art by Doug Mahnke and colors by David Baron are good, though.

Recommendation: It was ‘meh!’ for me. But I can understand if you would be interested in picking up a copy.

Which comic books did you read this week? Tell you picked up Marauders Issue 1 and Strikeforce Issue 2!
