Netflix has released the official trailer for Suburra: Blood on Rome Season 3. I can’t wait to binge-watch the final chapter when it debuts on October 30, 2020.

Suburra: Blood on Rome premiered on Netflix back in October of 2017. I didn’t watch it until the end of 2018 (if I remember correctly). I had read a couple of online opinions about the show’s interesting take on queer representation. With the second season about to be released in February 2019, I binge-watched the 10-episode first season and was ready for the 8-episode second outing. And now, I’m eagerly waiting to see what will happen in Suburra Season 3 when it drops on October 30, 2020.

For those who don’t know, Suburra: Blood on Rome is an Italian crime drama. It’s a prequel to the 2015 film Suburra (which I haven’t watched because I don’t want to spoil certain plot points). The narrative follows the power struggles between organized crime, churchmen, and politicians. Everyone’s trying to one-up each other to gain control of the city.

The story mostly follows Aureliano Adami (Alessandro Borghi), Alberto “Spadino” Anacleti (Giacomo Ferrara), and Gabriele “Lele”  Marchilli (Eduardo Valdarnini). Aureliano and Spadino belong to rival gangs and hate each other while Lele (son of a policeman) gets involved in the criminal world. The first season showed how these three had to try and work together to face certain issues.

As for the queer representation, due to the world that Spadino is a part of, he’s a closeted gay man. He’s trying to make his family take him seriously as an authoritative figure. He’s also forced into marrying an important young woman named Angelica (whom I like as a character). I enjoyed seeing the two, with time, developing a sense of mutual respect and love for each other.

And of course, Spadino also fell in love with the straight Aureliano (I mean, who wouldn’t? Ha!). I appreciated how the two seasons handled their relationship. The moment where Aureliano told Spadino that he loved him back, even if it wasn’t in a romantic way (yet?), was quite powerful.

Now, even though I liked the queer representation in Suburra, I do have to warn you. This is a story involving highly dangerous criminals. Tough decisions are made. Weaknesses are exploited. People die. So, don’t expect every queer character to come out unscathed. No one is really safe.

Here’s the trailer for Suburra Season 3!

Judging from the trailer, the stakes are higher than they have ever been. I’m also glad to see the writers continuing to give Spadino’s wife Angelica more to do. The same goes for Aureliano’s (maybe) girlfriend. These are women you don’t want to mess with.

According to Netflix:

In this final chapter, the fight to conquer Rome becomes more open and ruthless than ever. A big business that will tempt many is coming: the Jubilee, a promise of new illegal traffics, money and power.

Whoever will take possession of it will govern the capital. But everything has a price and the throne of Rome too. This time, it will come at a certain price.

As I said, I can’t wait!
