No More Secrets in Supergirl Season 5 (Well, Maybe a Few)

Supergirl is growing up. From a new, more mature suit (pants!), to a bit of a darker tone, Kara Danvers and her friends are all entering different stages in their lives. Here are some of the tidbits we learned from the cast of Supergirl at SDCC 2019.

In a panel moderated by surprise guest Jon Cryer (Lex Luthor), the cast of Supergirl at SDCC 2019 was happy to talk, but tight-lipped about certain things. Season 5 will focus on technology, how it impacts our lives, and how we use it as an escape from things that we don’t want to think about.

Obviously, there were many questions about the upcoming Arrowverse crossover, “Crisis on Infinite Earths“, and star Melissa Benoist is hoping that this storyline plays out a little differently than it does in the comics, but other than that (and the news that Tyler Hoechlin and Brandon Routh would both be playing Superman) they couldn’t say much else. There were also questions about the fate of James, as it was announced that Mehcad Brooks would be leaving the show at some point in season 5. Meanwhile, Lex Luthor isn’t as dead as we thought, because he’ll be back.

Perhaps the biggest thing, though, was the discussion surrounding the big “reveal” at the end of season 4, where Lex told his sister Lena that Kara – and all of her friends – have been lying to her. As far as that reveal goes, both Melissa and Katie McGrath (Lena) hope that this betrayal doesn’t lead to Lena being evil. Katie talked about how one of her favorite things about Lena is that she is human and flawed. But she knows that whatever Lena does, she will believe that what she is doing is right. The question is whether or not she allows the betrayal to define who she is as a person and her relationships with the other characters.

Alex’s adoption storyline will continue to be explored, because that is a very important thing for her growth, and it is something that a lot of women go through, so they want to treat it appropriately, with the attention that it deserves.

Here’s a first look at the upcoming season:

I was fortunate enough to be in the press room, which was as packed as the panel, with nine cast members (Melissa Benoist, Chyler Leigh, Mehcad Brooks, David Harewood, Katie McGrath, Azie Tesfai, Nicole Maines, Jesse Roth, and Andrea Brooks) and three executive producers (Jessica Queller, Robert Kovner, and Sarah Schechter).
