Supergirl Finale Will Be Double Super as Tyler Hoechlin Returns

Superman and Supergirl

Look! Up in the sky! It’s a bird! It’s a plane! No, it’s Tyler Hoechlin’s Superman, who will be returning for the Supergirl season 2 finale.

Hoechlin’s turn as Superman was generally well-received, introducing us to an older Clark who is no longer struggling to balance the two halves of his life but has fully embraced both of them. He appeared in National City in the season 2 premiere to help Kara (Melissa Benoist) save a crashing plane, and then he stuck around for a while. I thought the show did a good job of integrating him into the cast, leaving it open for his return, but not making him the focus. Instead, the primary focus of those two episodes was Kara trying to deal with her dual lives and going to Clark for advice.

No plot details have been made available yet about Hoechlin’s return, but with everything going on in National City this season, it’s no wonder that Kara could use a little help from her cousin. After all, an alien is masquerading as the President (or the President was always an alien? I am still confused by this!), there is major trouble brewing with the Daxamites, and Lillian Luthor is still at large.

I think Kara has been stumbling this season, what with losing her dream job at CatCo and the whole, you know, romance…thing. Clark can help Kara get back on track. They can also use this as an opportunity to give James (Mehcad Brooks) a little something more to do. James and Clark are BFFs, and I wonder if Clark knows about James’s alter ego…

This would also be a great chance to give us Lois Lane! I know the odds are slim, considering Hoechlin just arrived in Vancouver to shoot the finale, and we’ve gotten no news about new cast members. I also know that we shouldn’t introduce too many Superman characters in a show about Supergirl, but think of everything that Kara is dealing with right now. I would love to see her get to have some girl talk with Lois.

What do you guys think? What are your predictions for the finale? How do you think Clark/Superman will fit into the current storylines Supergirl has going?

UPDATE 4/12/17 1:10PM: Calista Flockhart will be returning as Cat Grant for two episodes, including the finale! I swear I’d heard this when I was originally typing up this article, but I couldn’t find a source so I didn’t mention it. I should have waited fifteen minutes!

The Supergirl season 2 finale airs May 22 at 8PM.
