SyFy Channel Releases 12 Monkeys Season 2 Premiere Early for Streaming
In advance of Season 2 of 12 Monkeys, returning April 18, the SyFy channel has released the season 2 premiere early for streaming.
12 Monkeys, SyFy channel’s post-apocalyptic time-travel series starring Aaron Stanford, Amanda Schull, Kirk Acevedo, Emily Hampshire, Barbara Sukowa, and Todd Stashwick, expands from the core premise of the 1995 film starring Bruce Willis and Madeleine Stowe. As the show’s second season approaches, the network has released Episode 2×01, “Year of the Monkey”, for an advance peek, streaming on the SyFy website, the SyFy app, VOD, and Hulu.
The series combines fast-paced, character-driven storytelling with science fiction and thriller elements. The emotional drama and complex relationships ground the series at its core, but it’s also a truly compelling time-travel puzzle as the characters “splinter” through time to try to stop a plague from wiping out most of humanity. 12 Monkeys raises ethical and philosophical questions you might expect of any time-travel story, but with its own particular brand of thoughtfulness as it explores whether to save the good of the many, or the ones you love, and if time travel is available, can you save the future by rescuing the past, or do you work in the now to make a better future? Can the past be saved? Should it be? It’s also immense amounts of fun to watch, with some stunning imagery, mad scientists, reluctant heroes, an often dizzying string of time-jumps that actually make sense and holds up on a rewatch, and the joy of things lost in a post-apocalyptic future.
Speaking to The Hollywood Reporter during the recent NBC Summer Press Day, Executive Producer Terry Matalas teased season 2 calling it “epic in scope” and said the time travel will be even broader than in season 1, going from all the way from World War I to the 1970s. Matalas called the range of time periods “a really great place to explore these characters emotionally.”
Referring to keeping track of the complicated timelines, Matalas explained, ”When you’re mapping that out, you have to make sure you’re not running into yourself…it’s a complicated writing process. It takes a lot, but we have a lot of fun doing it.”
Season 1 of 12 Monkeys is also available for streaming on Hulu if you want to check it out before season 2 officially gets under way.
