The 100 2×16 Review: Blood Must Have Blood, Part 2

the 100 2x16 3*stares at blinking cursor for 67 years*

I don’t even know how to begin this review. Where do I even start? So much was revealed to us. So much happened. It’s virtually impossible to put my thoughts and feelings on “Blood Must Have Blood, Part 2” into words. I suppose the word of the day is “bittersweet”. The remaining members of the 100 have been saved (well…not all of them), but at what price? Jaha has reached his destination, but what does it mean? And what is going on with that bunker Murphy found?

I have spent all season hoping that Clarke and Bellamy would be better leaders than their predecessors, that the 100 would take all the best qualities about the groups they have met and use that to form a new society. In this episode, it was proven to me that I was living a pipe dream. There will always be tough decisions to be made, and there are no easy answers. My beloved power couple committed genocide in order to save their people, believing that they had no other choice.

Was there another choice? Kane shouted that they could donate their bone marrow, but Cage didn’t listen. Dante refused to help because then his people would be doomed, and I couldn’t help but wonder when everyone got so fatalistic. After all, they are only in this position because Dante kidnapped the 100 in the first place, a fact which I think he realized, and that is one of the reasons why he believed he could not be redeemed. (They didn’t even have the decency to sedate the kids before harvesting them. I mean, that seems like the least they could have done.) Every decision made in this arc was so extreme that perhaps at that point there was no other way.

This act will have consequences. Clarke and Bellamy will forever bear the burden of their decision, but Clarke will most likely bear the brunt of the blame, which is why she left on her walkabout. Abby may understand that Clarke did what she had to do (“Maybe there are no good guys”), but I doubt Jasper will ever forgive her. And the Mountain Men may be gone (all except for Emerson – I caught you sneaking off, you little bugger), but this is far from the end of the storyline. Lexa’s truce with Cage is now null and void, so what does that mean for the 12 clans? And how will the Grounders react to what Clarke and Bellamy have done?

Jaha and Murphy’s story gave us far more questions than answers. It seems fairly obvious that there is no City of Light, but Jaha still could have been led by some divine purpose. …Or by artificial intelligence? Who or what is A.L.I.E. and was that a nuclear bomb she was hiding in that plantation? Has the bunker Murphy found been abandoned for 97 years, because apparently the food was still good? It’s easy to connect the “she” in the message Murphy saw with the “she” Jaha then discovers. Clearly the big mystery next season will be about A.L.I.E. and the mysterious launch codes and possibly the end of the world.

the 100 2x16 2My heart breaks for Jasper, yet I feel like that was the only logical end to their romance. After all, she couldn’t survive in the air, and Jasper would never have been able to stay in Mount Weather. Maya’s death will have a major impact on Jasper in the coming season, primarily on his relationships with Clarke, Bellamy, and especially Monty.

I refuse to feel any empathy for Cage, and to a lesser extent Dante, because there were definitely other options to pursue, and they purposefully chose a cruel one – and did so with seemingly no remorse. Cage’s death was such a great moment for Lincoln, overcoming his addiction in that way.

There’s not a whole lot I can say about Octavia that I haven’t said before, but she was phenomenal in this episode. She’s chosen her people, and that’s where her loyalties lie. And Lincoln has chosen her. I suspect they will chafe under the Arc’s rule, but that’s something to be dealt with in season 3.

We witnessed growth in Clarke and Bellamy’s relationship that will hopefully continue to develop into a strong and equal partnership. However, we have no idea what Clarke will be like when she returns from wherever it is she’s going. I loved the throwback to “Day Trip” (1×08), and the heartfelt embrace before she left. These two have come a long way since the early days and I look forward to seeing where they go from here.

I am simply stunned by this finale, you guys. The 100 always manages to pull out all the stops. It’s virtually impossible to predict what is going to happen. I don’t even understand how I’m able to process anything so soon after watching it. (Funny how I didn’t think I’d be able to say anything and here I am jabbering on.) What did you guys think? Are you already speculating about what will happen next season?

  1. I’ve been saying this since I started watching this show. It’s better than it has any right to be.

I’m so floored by this finale. There are so many great things to point out, that I don’t even know where to begin. Basically just incoherent gesturing and flailing at this point.

    1. seconded this entire comment. I feel ashamed for brushing it off as a “teen drama” for over a year.

  2. I’m super excited, and I’m really hoping that Jasper can forgive. I mean maya herself told him that none of them are innocent. I’m hoping he takes that to heart. Are we even sure Clarke is going to come back? if we knew they could get the actress that played lexa next year I would almost think clarke would go to her, just because Lexa is the ONLY one that could understand other then Bellamy what she had to do to save her people. I think season 3 will be partially about how to end alie but i’m curious how the rest of the sky ppl would get involved. I think clarkes travels may bring in another story as well maybe…I’m hoping we will get to see the other types of grounders like the is the the ice nation?

  3. I wanted to thank all those internet friends that suggeted this show to me (since I like this kind of *sci-fi meets surviving* kind of series ;-))…Well done 100!

PS-Besides, is it just me or CW network has improved a lot over these last years?! I didn’t belive them when TPTB told us how they wanted to experience new things etc, but actually they’ve been of word. That’s def good then, since I’ve been satisfied by a couple of their shows, like Nikita.
