The Adventure Zone: Graduation Ep. 8 “Mission: Imp Hospital”

mission: imp hospital

It’s semester break! The boys are earning some money on a break from school, they’re leveling up, they’re out wreaking havoc at a local imp hospital. This is not a hospital for imps like I thought, but it is a regular hospital that has been overtaken by imps in ‘Mission: Imp Hospital’. The pun makes up for it.

Mechanics time! Now that the first campaign arc is finished, Griffin is multiclassing into Sorcerer (or, as he says, “coming into magic the good Christian way,” which cracked up both me and Travis since we were all raised with a similar background of evangelical Christianity). The firbolg is getting more dexterous, and Argo is getting more “book smart.”

Also, apparently, the firbolg learned to Wild Shape at some point — my personal favorite part of being a druid, possibly the only good part — which leads to some hilarious reactions from the other boys.

Since ‘Mission: Imp Hospital’ is basically a dungeon crawl (hospital crawl?) episode, most of it is combat. That’s fun to listen to (and fun to play!) but less fun to read about later. We all had fun, and that’s what matters.

The best part is the interactions between the guys. They were laughing so hard they had to lean away from their mics, and in turn that made me laugh so hard I got tears in my eyes. It really feels like they’re having fun together, and that makes it so much better to listen to.

I’ve said it before and I’ll say it again: Clint’s refusal to learn the rules of 5e is an inspiration and I think about it every time I have to ask my regular group how a new mechanic works after a year and a half of playing together. When he was trying to make a saving throw against Griffin’s Thunderwave spell and he just goes, “I just rolled this twenty-sided dice and the side that’s up is the logo for D&D? Is that a 20?” I lost it. My man rolled a nat-20 and didn’t even know it.

Another great callback to Clint’s playing style is Justin roasting him while casting a healing spell on Argo. “I have this thing where when people are hurt in battle, this is crazy–,” he says, only to be cut off by laughter and Clint exclaiming, “That was four arcs ago!”

We will never forget Merle.

The boys aren’t quite able to get through the whole hospital in one episode, which is fine. These episodes are shorter, which I appreciate, and just absolutely full of tomfoolery. I’ll be absolutely surprised if this doesn’t take three episodes to get through.

What was your favorite part of ‘Mission: Imp Hospital’?
