Ever wanted to explore Insidious’ The Further, while being a cute and endearing Korean school girl, but with Cthulhu tentacles and a terrifying (yet oddly seductive) long-haired, razor-sharp demon woman after you? No? Well, The Coma 2: Vicious Sisters is a game you never knew you wanted!

I was provided with a free copy of The Coma 2: Vicious Sisters on the Nintendo Switch for review. The opinions I have shared are my own.

Look, let me just start this piece by saying, if you didn’t already know, by reading one of my previous gaming reviews, I’m the biggest scaredy-cat gamer, in all the Mushroom kingdom. I have a love-hate relationship with horror titles. I love to watch others play scary games, but once that controller is in my hands, I am closing my eyes at every knock, creak, and slam. I’ll run blindly if I have to. I go through such experiences because I’m a fan of video games. Now, onto the review!

The Coma 2: Vicious Sisters, developed by Devespresso Games and published by Headup and WhisperGames is a Korean survival horror-adventure. You play as Mina Park dealing with typical school drama. But everything changes when Mina happens to venture to the wrong part of the school at the wrong time, stumbling upon some kind of altar with members of the school seemingly apart of it. Mina falls unconscious and is placed into a world almost like her own, but much darker, scarier, and full of eldritch tentacles heralding rot and decay. She finds out quickly that a demoness is hunting her and said creature looks strangely like one of her teachers, only twisted and ravenous.

As the story unfolds characters come to her aid. There are also those who try to hinder her horror-survival journey. Mysteries abound as she explores her school, a police station, a run-down market, a subway, and a hospital. Mina is surprisingly calm for being trapped in the scariest, ugliest world ever.

Exploring is terrifying one hundred percent of the time when every obstacle could spell certain death from just a few scratches. Managing your resources like water for stamina, food for your health, matches for light, and mace to get away (and more), is relatively simple. You can also use certain things to hide. However, when you’re running from Vicious sister or some of her twisted creations, the ease suddenly goes out the window. So many times, when I was being chased, I panicked and ran right past a viable desk or shelf to hide in. And I loved that about this game.

The Coma 2: Vicious Sisters really amps up the horror with the eerie ambiance of the background music. The most frightening thing is trying to get to a certain room, only to hear a pair of high heels making their way toward you. The game does an amazing job of making you fearful about every hallway encounter. I’ve had times where I was running for my life only to run out of stamina and felt fear and rage engulf me as I watched Vicious sister completely impale me with her long claws. I’m sure to have nightmares about high heels for years to come.

As for the accolades, The Coma 2: Vicious Sisters won the “Grand Prix” (The Best Game) and the “Best Narration” (The Best Narrative) awards at the Taipei Game Show 2020’s Indie Game Award!

So, you can tell you’ll be picking up a copy of a game that’s well-made and well-received by the audience and critics.

The Coma 2: Vicious Sisters was made available on the Nintendo eShop and the PlayStation Store today (June 19, 2020). You can also get it on Steam.
