The Expanse at San Diego Comic-Con 2016

The Expanse

The Expanse is one of our favorite shows at The Geekiary–almost all of our staff watch it–so I was excited to be a part of the press room at San Diego Comic-Con this year, and I also attended the panel. Let’s just say that by the end,  I am even more excited for season two than before I went in.

The attendee panel was awesome, and a large part of that is because it was moderated by Mythbusters star Adam Savage, who happensIMG_0187 to be a big technology nerd. We also got to see a video about the “Top 9 Job Qualifications” for The Expanse, which was a lot of fun. It appears that a large portion (if not all) of season two has been filmed as we got a nice teaser reel as well.

If there was a recurring theme from both the panel and the press room, though, it would be how amazingly diverse the cast is. Shoreh Aghdashloo (Chrisjen Avasarala) outright said that it was the most diverse show that she has ever been on and Dominique Tipper (Naomi) agreed. It may look diverse tIMG_0175o us as fans, but when cast members go out of their way to announce it, you realize that they know they are part of something bigger. Of course, the panel also brought up the balance of the female characters and feminism (again mostly in the roles of Chrisjen and Naomi as the standouts). Fortunately, we will get introduced to another amazing female character in season two, Bobbie Draper, a Martian Marine.

One topic that was also discussed heavily was the use of technology in the series. As executive producer Naren Shankar mentioned in the panel, the use of technology is wallpaper in the series. It is definitely there, but a lot of it gets glossed over because the technology (unlike most science fiction) is not the focus of the show–the characters are.

Below you will find videos of the roundtable interviews from the press room. Videos include roundtables with Thomas Jane (Miller), executive producers Mark Fergus and Naren Shankar, and Shoreh Aghdashloo (Chrisjen) along with newcomer Frankie Adams (Bobbie Draper).
