(Update: September 17, 2019 – The original article mentioned actor Djimon Hounsou playing Neil Kenlock. However, Hounsou will be playing a character named Shola in The King’s Man.)

I enjoy the Kingsman films because of the interesting characters, even though the movies have certain problematic themes. That’s why I was looking forward to The King’s Man, which will serve as a prequel. However, having watched the teaser trailer, I couldn’t help but remember Wonder Woman and how the latest installment seems like an unnecessary detour from the main franchise.

The official teaser trailer for The King’s Man does give us some details about the plot and the characters. It will make use of the World War I setting and explore the origins of the organization Eggsy Unwin finds himself being a part of in the first Kingsman film.

History enthusiasts will recognize some well-known historical figures peppered throughout the teaser. Ralph Fiennes will be playing T. E. Lawrence, Gemma Arterton is Mata Hari, Rhys Ifans is Grigori Rasputin, and Daniel Brühl will take on the role of Felix Yusupov.

As for the rest of the cast, the young lead is actor Harris Dickinson playing Conrad. He looks like the character that will be taking Eggsy’s role (being introduced to the spy organization for the first time). Aaron Taylor-Johnson is playing Lee Unwin. So, we might get to see some of Eggsy’s ancestors.

Now, I don’t want to sound mean or anything, but the teaser did remind me of Wonder Woman. I thought of Diana during the No Man’s Land scene and the moment where a character with a shield is pushed through a wall.

I do love the kilts, though. More men in kilts!

Also, considering all of the stuff that debuted in Kingsman: The Golden Circle, I can’t help think of this upcoming prequel as an unnecessary detour from the main franchise. I want to go back to seeing Eggsy and Harry. I don’t mind a prequel, but at this point, there are still a lot of stories to be explored with the characters from the first two films. Frankly, I would have preferred a Statesman spin-off instead of this.

Directed by Matthew Vaughn, The King’s Man is set to hit U.S. theaters come February 14, 2020.
