Little Guy Games has announced that you can “embark on a journey of self-discovery” when the indie title The Last Sky becomes available on Steam Early Access on February 28, 2020.

According to the press release, The Last Sky features a blend of 3D puzzles and 2D platforming. The title will provide players an experience that includes surreal cinematic scenes and thought-provoking puzzles to help them see the inner landscapes of Jake’s mind.

For those wondering about Jake, the official description of the game reads:

As The Last Sky opens players will meet an elderly Jake, a retired air force pilot suffering from PTSD who, looking to escape the confines of his mind, has embarked on a shamanic journey. Players will need to solve escape room style puzzles in order to unlock moments of Jake’s past that are metaphorically represented as the very room that Jake is trapped inside. As players interact with objects around the room they’ll learn more about pivotal moments in Jake’s life, ranging from joyous childhood memories to painful war-time events that Jake has sought to bury deep in his psyche.

Coming to the platform-style gameplay, players will need to piece together Jake’s past by entering surreal dream states. Inside the dream-like atmospheres, a young Jake will have to move through a suspension of time, space, and reality.

The game is supposed to be a “single-session adventure” which combines “thought-provoking dialogue with impactful player choices.”

Here’s the teaser trailer!

Judging from the teaser trailer, I like the style this title is going for. Everything looks simple yet impactful. There’s definitely a creepy element that I appreciate. You can’t dive into a person’s mind without exploring the dark stuff.

The Last Sky will be made available on Steam Early Access on February 28, 2020. It features full controller support as well as an original soundtrack. I urge you to check out the title’s page on Steam to see more stills from the game.

You can visit the developer’s official website for more information about this upcoming project.

The Key Features include:

  • Narrative-driven – voice acting, text, and environmental story techniques are seamlessly combined to immerse players in the compelling narrative of Jake’s life.
  • Surreal scenes – guide Jake through a dream-state where past, present, and future intertwine to suspend reality.
  • Escape room style puzzles – search through Jake’s surroundings to piece together moments of his past and progress through his inner journey.
  • Choice-driven – shape Jake’s path of self-discovery and acceptance through thought-provoking dialogue choices.
  • Explore – venture through Jake’s subconscious with 3D puzzles and 2D platforming.
  • Atmospheric soundtrack – an original soundtrack immerses players in Jake’s dream-state.

As for Little Guy Games, it was founded back in 2009. The company believes that “games have the power to transform and illuminate the human mind.” The aim is to “combine art, technology, and entertainment to create games that are unique and transformative.”

This indie title reminded me of Distortion. While not a 2D platformer, the theme around regaining one’s memory does seem similar to me.
