The More Janeway the Merrier: Star Trek Prodigy at NYCC 2022

Star Trek Prodigy NYCC

The first I really heard about Star Trek Prodigy, one of Paramount+’s five currently-airing Star Trek series, was when the series was announced at the first Comic-Con@Home in 2020.

At first, I didn’t think much of it. A Star Trek series aimed at kids sounded interesting, but it wasn’t something I thought I would sit down and watch. Then they were one of the few studios with a presence at last year’s toned-down New York Comic Con, and the panel piqued my curiousity so much that I made it a point to check out the series when it premiered on the streaming platform.

This year, Paramount+ brought Star Trek Prodigy back to NYCC – along with Star Trek Discovery and the unbelievable experience that was Star Trek Picard. They introduced the newest addition to the crew – life-long Star Trek fan Jameela Jamil, playing Ascenscia, an ensign under Admiral Janeway. Not to be confused with Hologram Janeway. (That’s right, there are two Janeways now!)

They also debuted the trailer for the second half of season 1, which begins airing on October 27. The trailer indicates that we will finally get some answers about Dal’s mysterious origins (but of course that only leads to more questions), as well as meeting some old adversaries (yes, that is the Borg you saw). It was also revealed at the panel that some familiar characters return – Edward Jellico and Outrageous Okona will both appear on Prodigy this season.

I was extremely fortunate enough to be in the press room at NYCC and talk with cast members Kate Mulgrew (Admiral Janeway/Hologram Janeway), Brett Gray (Dal), and Jameela Jamil (Ascencia), as well as executive producers Kevin and Dan Hageman and director/EP Ben Hibon.

You can listen to our interviews from the press room below:

Star Trek Prodigy season 1 returns to Paramount+ with weekly episodes on October 27. I will once again be reviewing the episodes, so stay tuned for those!
